Wow! It’s Wednesday: Phoning It In
So yesterday Fierce and Nerdy contributor Kyle and I spent the night calling people about voting No on Prop 8, as opposed to watching the debate.
I think Kyle put it best when he told me in an email that he wanted to volunteer for Obama, too, but he didn’t think Obama needed his help as much as the movement to get this proposition defeated did.
Now, being more nerdy than fierce most weekdays, and sensitive to boot, calling strangers and trying to convince them to vote against the proposition, which would overturn the gay marriage law in California, was all sorts of uncomfortable. And at one point, after talking to a black woman who kept saying, “I don’t agree with it. I know them people marrying is wrong,” I got so frustrated and angry that I wanted to give up.
But then I thought to myself, what if Mildred and Richard Loving had just given up when white people (and let’s put it out there, some black people) were telling them that it was wrong for them to marry? They fought against the injustice of not being able to marry the person you love. And the white lawyer that defended them probably felt just as disheartened by his fellow man as I was feeling at that moment.
I picked up the phone and made another call.
Because of the Lovings, I was able to marry my husband in any state I chose last year. Interracial marriage is legal in the United States, and Gay Marriage should be, too. Guys let me tell you, I believe in gay marriage even more than I believe in Obama, and you guys know how I adore Obama.
I’ve volunteered to do another phone bank in Silverlake from 10am – 2pm on Saturday, October 18th. I would love for you to join me, but if that’s too far for you to travel or a bad day for you, there are phone banks happening most days all over Los Angeles, which is a battleground city in California.
If you are out of state, please consider donating to our cause. I know these are hard economic times, but whatever you can spare helps, especially considering that the Yes on Prop 8 campaign has raised millions, much of it from out-of-state donors. We’re trailing in the polls and fundraising right now, and we need you to stand up with us on this.
To cite Obama one more time, there is definitely an “urgency of now” on this issue. We have less than a month before Prop 8 will be voted on in the November 4th election. We really need your help. We need you to donate if you’re out of state; and volunteer and/or donate AND especially VOTE NO ON PROP 8 ON NOVEMBER 4TH if you live in California.

I went to my first legal boy-boy wedding over the weekend in San Francisco. During the ceremony every time they came to the phrase “State of California” (like “vested in me by the State of CA) the officiants kept pointedly saying “the GREAT state of California.” It’s pretty amazing what’s happened, and it left me just a little helpless feeling that all this could be taken away. Broken hearted.

And yes, you should all give money and vote no and tell all your friends and family. And not just because gay people deserve the right to marry, but also because when a conservative supreme court rules a state restriction unconstitutional, the idea that you can just get some signatures, slap a proposition on the ballot, and amend the effing constitution to go over the supreme court’s head with a simple majority is crazy. Not to mention the whole constitutional 2nd-class citizen thing.
