Fierce OR Nerdy: Geek Love Memorial
Last week most of you chose to die by drowning, as opposed to burning. I myself am terrified of drowning because somehow it seems more likely.
Unfortunately, there just doesn’t seem to be a tasteful way to segue from imagined death into actual death… so… Let’s just do this:
This is a very special John Hughes Tribute Edition of Fierce OR Nerdy.
To celebrate the guy who made geeky cool, I’ve listed a dozen of the original films Hughes wrote. I left out a few of the more obscure ones, the sequels, and I focused solely on the 1980’s (so Home Alone, Career Opportunities, Curly Sue, and Beethoven all missed the cutoff).
Vote for your favorite. Feel free to defend it and commemorate Hughes in the comments.

Well for obvs reasons, I have to say Sixteen Candles, followed closely by Pretty in Pink, and Breakfast Club which all get mentions in my novel. But I do want to give a non self-serving shout out to Some Kind of Wonderful, Uncle Buck, and Weird Science — all movies that I enjoyed over and over and over again during my YA years.

Tough choice between Pretty and Pink, Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller, but Beuller won for it's adventure and all the dialogue I quoted over and over and, of course, my HUGE crush on Cameron. I still think he's dreamy.

I was torn. I went with Ferris Bueller but I wish that I had two votes so I could chose The Breakfast Club too. My husband has actually never seen the Breakfast Club and for the last month I've been badgering him to sit down and watch it. Now this weekend seems like the perfect time.

I loved so many of these movies but I had to pick National Lampoon's Vacation because it was my all time fave (even though I was never comfortable with how they displayed E. St. Louis, IL). I loved all of them (except I don't remember Some Kind of Wonderful). Is one of the cable channels having a marathon this weekend??

While I think FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF is an overall better movie structurally and story-wise, THE BREAKFAST CLUB is the quintessential John Hughes movie and an archetype for 1980's misunderstanding & disillusionment, and therefore it gets my vote. Cue "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from Simple Minds.

Cue "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from Simple Minds.

Candy beautifully portrayed the adult 'geek' role that Hughes had so successfully exposed in his earlier films. Hughes' films were such a influential part of our growing up. …. Bueller…..Bueller…..Bueller…..

It should also be noted that PRETTY IN PINK, though written by Hughes, was not directed by him – those honors went to Howard Deutch. All the more reason why THE BREAKFAST CLUB should be the winner.
