Buy Me This: Survival Edition

With all the fires going on in Southern California I thought this would be a great time to talk about a home survival kit.
We keep a duffel bag in our garage with the following items listed after the jump. A lot of people like to keep more than what’s on this list, but I like having everything in one place that I can easily grab.
First off Food. You can go a few different ways with this. We have Emergency Rations, They taste like dirt but they do the job and last longer then your other choices.
If you want something that tastes a little better, you want MRI’s they are what the military gives to troops in the field. They taste like the freeze dried food I ate when I was a boy scout.
Next you need water I keep both water rations and water purifying tablets. You just don’t know what you might need.
So now that you have some food and water, it’s time for some accessories. The most important thing is a crank radio/flashlight/cell phone charger. You need to know whats going on and keep your phone charged.
Next a Survival kit. This is just as important as the Radio. It should have a first aid kit and a blanket at the minimum. We also have a separate first aid kit but many Survival kits include a first aid kit.
I also recommend a Multi Tool of some kind.
What do you keep in your survival kit? Let me know in your comments.
Wow, dude, you're really prepared.
I tend to keep some in-house stuff like large quantities of bottled water (upon the insistence of my worst-case-scenario mother) and first aid, but I never have a to-go kit. I also have a solar-powered flashlight which I like a lot.
I do, though, always insist on having a manual can opener and don't bother having an electric in the house, since people with electric can openers learn the hard way that canned food does them no good without electricity (though you could probably use your multi-tool to break the food free).
I love that your mom is a worst-case-scenario thinker — and btw, she's totally right. We also have the solar-powered flashlight, which we used to use often b/c Silver Lake is ridiculous w/ the blackouts when ever it rains and during Santa Ana season. We also have a manual can opener.
But in my opin, these are just the basics. I hope to build up to having backpacks with clothes and enough to go on an emergency two-night trip for each of us. The threat of evacuations from the nearby fires helped me see what all we really need now that we live near mountains.

Be careful with bottled water it does go bad after a couple of years.

Scotch, on the other hand, can last decades in an emergency kit!
I don't know how long you could live on Scotch alone.

Don't forget emergency supplies for your furbabies! You need some kind of portable water bowl and food stashed away for them. And litter and a small box, if you have cats. Not that I'm this prepared, but it's on my list of things to think about for our emergency kit.
Thanks for pointing this out. We'll get a couple of extra pet bowls to throw in the survival bag the next time were at petco.

I got a delux edition that comes with chemicals to make a toilet in a bucket, complete with toilet seat. My roommate made fun of me but I told him, "Have fun pooping in the yard. You're not getting near my toilet."
Ooh, I want a survival toilet!
