Chic Geek: Finding Your Inner Stylist Pt. 2 – Accessorizing

A blogumn by Delia Hauser

We’ve all done it.  We’ve all stood in front of a mirror examining a hat, scarf or new piece of jewelry and asked the BIG question.  “But…Is It Me?”

This madness has to stop.  We ARE whomever we please and we should allow ourselves to change our look everyday if we so choose. I know, I know; this can be hard.  We get into style holes and we stay there.  We decide early on that we are “old navy” girl or “earthy” girl or “gothic chic” girl and that’s where we stay until we wake up one day questioning the things we really like.  So, I’m challenging you to shake it up tomorrow with your accessories.  Style yourself into a new person for a day.

Every morning I go through the same routine.  My boyfriend calls it my “private time”.  Indeed it is; and should probably stay that way considering what strange things happen behind those closed doors.  After an outfit is formed and the shoes are chosen, it’s time to decide what character I am that day.  I try on jewelry, scarves, bags, I make faces and strike poses that I might make during the day in that particular outfit to see if the decoration matches the mood.  My simple dress or jeans and a t-shirt could become seriously chic, sexy, silly, quirky, bold, or whatever feels right in the moment.

Next time you go shopping, try buying something different; gold instead of your silver (or vice versa), something a little chunkier, crazier, or even sleeker than usual. As you grow more accustomed to stepping out of your shell, you can mix things up a bit, but the beginner stylist should start with a clean palette (a really simple outfit) and two or three bold accessories.  Here are some “characters” to try on tomorrow.  Test it out!   Life is simply more fun this way!

Amazing list! I am an accessory freak. All I need is a good pair of jeans, white tee and fantastic accessories. LOVE (and need) the Le Petit Poulailler straw purse, Marc Jacobs headband and The Cousin Sisters ribbon bracelet.

Thanks for including my paper doll necklace.

Though, I rock more of a writer-nerd look, can I just say that I love and absolutely must have everything in the plain old pretty and girly section. The Duck and Dog headband would rock against my small fro. I adore the lillyellas earrings and the crave necklace. And Holly, when are you going to restock the paperdoll necklace??? Because I need it like yesterday. That’s all.

    etc

P.S. — I might be willing to go into foreclosure for that Marni clutch.

I would go into foreclosure for Marni ANYTHING….
And did you look at Holly’s other stuff?! God bless great images and a creative mind!

Sorry Holly, you’re going to have to re-re-list it. I don’t know what happened. One moment I was looking at it, and the next moment, paypal was informing that you would be shipping it to me fairly soon. Complete blank on what happened in between — at least that’s what I’m going to tell my husband.

I think that this site and Ernessa are going to be the death of me. I don’t need people to help me shop. I have LOTS of accessories and clothes but new ones are always so attractive and somehow feel different. I want the Chloe or Linda Farrow sunglasses. . . .

Very cool Delia, very cool. First you inspire me to buy a new pair of shows (4 inch, black and metallic gray, oxfords) which are completely out of character for me and now I am seriously thinking accessories and more accessories. Although, your taste is a little too high end for me. Perhaps you can craft a list of less expensive recommendations. =)

Monique, there’s a ton of stuff under $50. It’s all mixed in. Look again. :)

    Delia,

What is Etsy? Also, do you the designers that you are featuring? I think that I have to have the Iomiss earrings but am curious about the quality. . . .

Etsy is a marketplace for handmade goods. Artists and designers open their own store through the site and sell their goods directly to people like you! This means that not only are you probably paying their rent and cell phone bill by supporting their work, you are NOT paying a huge company a 200% mark-up.

Individual stores have their own return policies- check them out before buying. I think products purchased directly from an artist are higher quality than those purchased from a store that uses a factory (with unskilled and underpaid workers) or buys wholesale from an artist (b/c they have cut corners on their design to make thousands from home).
