And E, it boggles my mind when candidates and even actual office holders are out there in public talking about implementing things that they have absolutely no control over. I see this a lot at the local level in NJ with candidates talking about implementing taxes, etc. which are controlled by the state not by the municipality. But they have no idea because they do not even understand what is in their power as an elected official let alone what things are governed by the city versus the state versus the federal government.

Brian, I think you are right on point. I too believe that a civil service type examine that shows that the person understands the role that they would like to take on is key. But I think your other point is significant...schools don't teach civic responsibility anymore and most of us don't get it at home either. So what you have is a voting populace that may be filled with lots of uninformed folks who just walk in and flip the switch. When that happens elections are much more like high school popularity contests...with people focusing on who is cutest, coolest, has the best slogan, campaign signs or who ran the nastiest campaign rather than on the issues.

Some wise advice, Ernessa. I did not start out with any financial planning and instead started the process with just a few tests, just a few more, just try this little intervention, just add this, on and on. The financial death of a thousand cuts. Or rather, 10,000 cuts, the first round. Another 70,000 cuts a few years later. Especially early on in the process, no one thing costs that much, but they add up to hundreds or even thousands per month.

My advice is to be prepared for anything. I fully expected that when I started testing, they'd find something fixable and we'd have an easy solution. When they didn't find anything, I expected that the initial interventions would work. Then I expected that bumping up the interventions would work. Oh, adding acupuncture will totally do the trick. First IVF has to work. And so on. I never, ever expected that once I got pregnant I would miscarry, nor that I would defy medical logic by failing so many interventions, nor that it would take me 7 years.

Most people have a quick and relatively simple road through infertility treatment. If they reach the status of "infertile," most people have to deal with more than they'd like, but it's frankly not really all that much. And then there are those of us who require huge levels of intervention over many years to achieve success. Those who get pregnant on a break between IVF cycles 4 and 5, or similar urban legends. And then there are those who try everything possible and never end up with a baby. The problem is that when you start, you have no idea which group you'll fall into. You have no idea how long it will take, how much it will cost, what it will do to your body and mind, whether it will even work in the end. My advice is to be prepared for that level of uncertainty.

I'm not a fan of pre-season, If they played the starters longer than I would watch. However after the first quarter most teams have pulled the starters and you are watching the 2nd and 3rd stringers. I like your Broadway analogy but you don't go to a preview were the leads only act in the first 15 minutes and then the second understudies come out and finish.

Great points, Brian and great article, Monique. I wonder how one would get something like that on the law books. Watching Meg Whitman ads, I worry that she doesn't fully understand that government is nothing like a business. And I've definitely wondered if Arnold understood exactly what the governor did and did not have the power to do. It felt like the majority of his term was spent threatening to do things he really didn't have the authority to do with a single swoop of his hand.

I worry about the players. Less rehearsal equals more injuries and it's already an injurious enough game.
