Dear Thursday: (Media) Zombie Nation

Sadly, I look at this pic and I wonder, "Would I be able to access my 3G network here?" If not, I would prob just settle for day of floating aimlessly and reading a book ... on my Kindle.
So, I’ve been mean to post this shocking statistic for awhile now, but I was busy doing other stuff on my … computer.
Apparently, the average American spends like 8.5 hours everyday in front of some kind of media screen. Now when I read that statistic, I was like, that can’t be right — I spend WAY more time than that in front of media screens.
I mean if you add up time spent on my beloved laptop, my beloved iPhone, my beloved Kindle, and in front of my beloved TV… wow. I would say that on weekdays I spend maybe two non-media waking hours a day — and it’s not even that if you count my car radio and our built-in shower radio. On weekends the non-media hours go up, but even on Saturday and Sunday I’m not sure if I spend more time my media or my husband.
Please tell me I’m not the only who spends an average of 14 – 15 weekday hours in front of some kind of media screen. Do you clock this kind of time? And if so, what’s your biggest media suck. Mine is my laptop, followed extremely closely by my iPhone.

I don't know if a Kindle should really count… I mean, technically you're reading… there's something redeeming about that, isn't there?
Technically I'm mostly reading on my iPhone, too — google reader is the bomb for keeping all my favorite blogs straight. But it's still a media screen. Also, if I was reading books on my computer, wouldn't that still count as in front of a media screen?

I've had acupuncturists tell me to spend less time in front of screens because it sucks out my qi. I've tried to explain that although I can cut try to cut down on TV or casual internet use, I can't not work. It's not just the screens — they also claim that reading books drains my qi, so I've given up on that argument. I'm supposed to use my mind less? Not gonna happen.
