I have a few friends who went to WBC games. I wanted to go but I was sick.

I also wish we could see American teams play Japanese teams. We call it the world series but is it if we don't have all pro baseball teams playing?

MLB's focus with the WBC has been on promoting the sport on the international stage. Most of it takes part before March Madness. It's not that the players are not committed, its the major league teams who are not. The players who take part really enjoy it, but many don't want to go against the people signing their paychecks. So really the conflict is between MLB as a governing body and its subject teams themselves. However, since MLB's prime focus with the WBC has been to grow the sport overseas, it's willing to look past the lack of interest here at home.

I find this interesting, b/c apparently the WBC finals were held right here in Los Angeles, but i wasn't even aware of them, and I'm a total newshound. I'm not quite sure why the NFL and NCAA are so good at getting the American public so excited about a sport, but the MLB just isn't. You say the players weren't all that committed to playing in the WBC, and I can't help but think that's because the fan commitment to this event just isn't there. In my opin, if Team USA really wants to win this thing, then they really need to get their country behind them an excited about them participating.

I lived in Japan for a year, and I doubt that a baseball event of this magnitude would have slipped past the MSM or its people. I think the MLB has to commit to making this THE event to kick off the baseball season, or are they too afraid and apathetic to go up against March Madness?
