Future So Bright: I’m Scared For America
.
A blogumn by Josh Grelle
Okay, so I know this is supposed to be more of a review column, but I really can’t resist writing about this, the reason I’m scared for America.
You may be thinking this is about the economy, the election, or maybe even the war, but you are wrong. The reason I’m worried is because of people my age. I myself being a nerd am more into politics than most people my age, and so one of the topics I talk about regularly is politics.
I often find myself in a debates, and seeing as how I’m a Democrat in Texas most times I am outnumbered, But it’s not the Republican factor that I’m worried about (although I find it rather annoying). The thing I’m worried about is that most of the people my age I debate with are not Republican because they honestly believe in Republican values and ideas, but because their parents are Republican.
Maybe I’m just expecting too much from these non-nerds, but if you’re fifteen maybe sixteen, then shouldn’t you have developed a sense of your own political beliefs? I wouldn’t mind if they actually knew what they were talking about and why they choose McCain as the candidate that they want, but the usual response is I don’t know or because Obama’s a Muslim.
And then all of the cool kids, instead of choosing McCain, choose Obama, not because they are supporting him politically but because they think that it’s cool to support Obama. I mean seriously, if these people are going to be the ones choosing the president in 2012, then I would prefer that they didn’t vote in the first place. Voting is a privilege that not everyone in this world gets to enjoy and I find it rather appalling that anyone would even degrade it by having the audacity to choose to believe what they are told without question, just because someone told them it was the right thing to do. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR I’m angry.
.
Well Josh I would like to say it gets better but I know a lot of 30 somethings that are voting for the same reasons. All you can do is defend your position with facts and try not to get angry.

Josh, I didn’t develop a real political perspective until I got to college. I remember my parents complaining, because the Democrats couldn’t find a good candidate to put up against the Republicans when I was your age. And I was excited about Clinton during his first term, b/c THEY were excited. In defense of your counterparts, you’re learning SO much in high school. It’s hard to attend to your political life as well. But 4 more years and you’ll meet people who are just as passionate about politics and who know what they’re talking about.
Though, I do agree with CH to some extent. I’ve interacted with a few adults who still just vote what their parents voted for no rhyme or reason.
I don’t mean to meddle in another country’s political matters but please America, don’t let THAT woman get anywhere near the big hoose – the rest of the world is scared!
If it helps (which I know it doesn’t really) most British young people have a similar attitude towards politics. In fact they probably know a lot more about the US political climate just now than they do about their own.
I’m just glad when anybody gives a damn. There’s been so much apathy for too long. Let’s hope the passion is contagious.

Its sad to say that my generation (somewhere between Ernessa’s and Josh’s) is EXACTLY the same. I can’t remember ever talking about politics with my friends before now, my mom wouldn’t vote until this last election, and I’ve never read a newspaper front to back in my life. I DO care now, but I hate to think we (my peers) are a huge reason we’ve found ourselves in this awful situation by not voting and being apathetic.
