Guess the Random Lyric: Me-1: You-0
What’s that I hear? Is that the sound of me doing the “I stumped you, suckas” dance? Must be because no one guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Destroy Everything You Touch” by Ladytron.
But let’s see if you can stage a comeback today.
I used to play this song a lot during my starving artist days. Even though I think it was meant to be a nostalgic love song, it always cheered me up when I was feeling sad about having consigned myself to a life in the arts. But now I often feel nostalgia for this nostalgic song. Go figure.
That all introduced, who sang:
Half of me is ocean
Half of me is sky
Guesses in the comments, but before we jump to the Ladytron video, I just want to address something that was said in the comments yesterday. Suzy Snakeeyes put forth “Rock Me Tonite” by Billy Squier as an example of a worse video than the one for Air Supply’s “Making Love Out of Nothing At All.” My answer to that is no, Suzy. Not only did I dance along with Billy when I was a kid, I love the spastic dancing, and the shirt ripping, and most of all, I love that Billy went for it. I consider this a perfect capsule of a fledgling form. And how fun that the band showed up at the end. The Air Supply video on the other hand is just plain old bad. Even their hair doesn’t look good for the time. At least Billy’s mullet perm was impeccable.
That all argued, you’ll find both Ladytron and Billy Squier after the jump:
“Walls” by Tom Petty

ok, I know its a day late and a dollar short, but I have to say that the video for Starship’s “Nothings gonna stop us now” is pretty god awful. Just its ties alone to the trashy film “Mannequin” and references in the video make it a must see.
Admission of guilt: I used to rent that movie all the time when I was a kid, my dad just thought I had a thing for Kim Cattrall…. god how clueless, I just wanted to dress the windows

You’re right, Zacki. Though, I too, loved this movie and this song to pieces when I was a kid — I even have a particularly bad memory of asking the most popular girl at my mostly black school if she had heard “Nothing’s Going to Stop Us Now” by Starship, then when she said “no” with distaste in her voice, telling her it was a great song and trying to teach her the words. Shockingly, I was dead unpopular all the way through high school. But the point is thanks for the memory.
However, much like Suzy’s entry, while your video is awful, I would still contend that it’s not nearly as awful as the Air Supply one as there was no wooden acting and once again, all of their ratted out mullets were really sweet. But keep on trying, everyone. If we keep this up we’ll have enough for a “Most Awful 80’s Videos” post.
ok, I see your Air Supply and raise you a Journey – Seperate Ways
c’mon imaginary, and or fake instruments, clawing the air, pist pumps, bad lip synching, sad attempt at plot, having it all just be a dream…. It’s like somebody’s cousin got a video camera and one weekend they decided to borrow a friend’s girlfriend to shoot their music video. This one may not be the worst, but is pretty bad….

oh my god, Zacki — it’s like you’re zeroing in on all of my sweet spots! this also falls under “wonderfully awful” — in fact Suzy and I have such a sweet karaoke moment, in which I pretended to play said invisible piano, that I know she will co-sign my check when I say that this video is AWESOME. Suzy, please back me up!!!
Yesterday, I gave my boyfriend five seconds to name the worst video ever. I was hoping he’d immediately answer with the Billy Squier video that I posted yesterday, but his answer, like Zacki’s, was Separate Ways by Journey.
That said, I once saw Ernessa play the Jonathan Cain air keyboard role from this video at karaoke, so I imagine she has a soft spot for this one.

And though I know Ernessa will shoot this one down, too, because she’s such a big fan of sweet mullets and spastic dancing, I do feel compelled to add this to the list:

Two certified rock gods…being very un-rock god like.

Wow, I’m really impressed. You two went the extra mile.
Suzy, I loved that video when I was a kid, but watching it now, made me realize just how awful it was — especially since Bowie and Jagger never kissed like I thought they would at a couple of points. Thanks for destroying my innocence.
And Zacki, there were so many horrible things in the MSM video, which I had never seen before including terrible clothes and stalker nerds.
I’m having trouble deciding which was worse. May have to put it to the readers tomorrow.
