Inspirational Monday: Up with Quality
.
A blogumn by Kalimba Bennett
About a month ago I was woken up in the wee hours of the morning by a phrase that was repeating loudly in my head. – “Quality of life.” I had no idea what the significance was, so I wrote it down to get it out of my head and went back to sleep. When I woke up and sat with the phrase, I realized my subconscious was asking me to look at my life in a new way. I thought to myself, what if I made a list of “qualities” I want my life to express?
We already do this in do many places, right? We make mental or literal lists of the qualities we want in a husband or wife (tall, educated, kind, funny, athletic), a job (inspiring, short commute, room for growth) what our dream home would look like (modern, big yard, lots of windows), so why not do it with our lives? I began to write down qualities as though I was shopping for my life. I want a life that is joyful, creative, stable, full of health, financially abundant, philanthropic, etc.
I’ve always been a huge believer in the importance of having a clear vision when striving toward a goal. The older I get the more proof of experience I have that knowing where you want to go is the best way to get there. This “quality of life” list is wonderful starting place for creating that vision. As we come to the end of the year, it’s a beautiful time to reflect on the last 12 months. I want to invite you to take a peak at all the “qualities of life” that your 2008 expressed. Did you have a year of power, strength, surprise? Was your year stable, safe, and structured or was it more of a fun and frivilous adventure kind of year?
Next, I want to invite you to begin to think about 2009 and what “qualities of life” you’d like to experience next year. In the next two weeks, as the qualities come to you, write them down. Keep your own list on your blackberry or near your bed. On the next Inspirational Monday, we’ll use those qualities as springboards for goal setting and visioning for your upcoming year. It’s gonna be a spectacular one!
Bless your bones,
Kalimba

Kalimba, I started making a list on the plane and am feeling very inspired though a little intimidated. Looking forward to the next column.

I always feel so peaceful after reading your blogs. This blog had me thinking all day of who I want to be in this life. Thank you so much for the PMA and the idea of a better self.

Ernessa, I can totally relate. Who I want to be and what I want my life to look like almost always inspires and terrifies me simultaneously. I say stick with the inspiration and embrace the intimidation – it's all part of the growing process, right? Hopefully I'll be able to offer some tools in the next blogumn to create some concrete action to move us both toward our vision.
I love this quote from Amelia Earhart: "The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do."
