Oh It’s Tuesday: Old People and Celebrities
So remember last Tuesday when I went on that diatribe against standing in line behind old people and basically everyone agreed with me except Josh G from Future So Bright, who is only 14 and therefore has not had enough time to develop deep-seated (but totally true!) prejudices yet?
Well, I’ve decided to add celebrities to the list of people you don’t want to get in line behind.
The scene: The Glendale Costco. The line: composed of 4 guys. So it was both not-old and short by Costco standards. The celebrity: Dave Annable from Brothers & Sisters in a twee blue sweater and wool English cap, standing at the front of the line.
First question: why was Dave Annable at the Glendale Costco? Answer, stocking up for what looked like some kind of New Year’s party. Second question: Why was standing in line behind Dave Annable so horrible. Second answer: I’m still not sure why. I think it has something to do with Costco only taking one type of credit card and requiring that you use an ATM/Debit card if you don’t have one. But 10 minutes later the line still hadn’t moved. Calls were made. A very pretty girl materialized — a girlfriend? A personal assistant — we may never know. Dave spoke to her with the same perplexed puppy dog look on his face that he uses whenever he accidentally tells another family member something he wasn’t supposed to tell them (basically every episode). She talked to the cashier. Five more minutes passed. The longer line with the old people completely cycled out. And then finally, they managed to check out just like regular non-celebrities.
I would’ve been mad, but it gave me a subject for today’s personal blog, so there’s that.
Still, I’m adding celebrities to the list of people I won’t get in line behind if I can help it. Just saying….
I'm with ya! About 5 years ago, we were in line at Ralphs behind Valerie Bertinelli and she paid with a check. Not a huge issue, but she did that thing that iritating thing that check payers do. She stood there, waiting while her groceries were all totaled, and the cashier gave her the total. Only then did she decide to look through her purse for her checkbook, pull it out after about 2 full minutes and then started writing the check. I say if you see an old celebrity standing in line, find a lane very far away.

Here's one from my list.
I have recently witnessed at least 4 families ignore the 3 pre-boarding calls at an airport gate then get in line while their kids run circles around the gate attendant, parents trying to hand off boarding passes, point with their chin as to which kids are theirs and yell to get them to board (hands are full with gear). Frustrated attendant points out that there was Pre-Boarding for this reason.
Now not being with children I know some will say "oh you have no idea how hard it is to travel with kids, etc. Its not that easy" I get that. I've travelled with kids before – its definitely more work. What I don't get is why those with young kids don't take advantage of the extra time and chance to board before everyone else. I'm pretty sure I will when and if the time comes, because I would love the additional time, space and assistance of those flight attendants to help me with my kids and our gear! Plus I wouldn't want them injured by all these super heavy, stuffed to the brim, carryon luggage everyone uses (I can say that because I tend to have a lot of carryon baggage after a vacation, thanks to my shopaholic tendencies and have nearly taken out a small child or two). Heck, I'd like to use pre-boarding now but I feel bad if I take that extra attention away from the families and folks who really need it. Plus there is little sympathy for young shopaholic.
Guess I need to figure out another way to qualify for pre-boarding?

Looks like I better start shopping at the Glendale Costco… ;)
I was in line behind Drew Carey a few years ago (when his show was on) at a Burbank Ralph's and he had no problem checking out. He was buying dog treats & dog toys – one can only assume they were for his dog…
