Philosophical Monday: The Big Chop
So those new hairdo pictures I promised on Monday? They’re actually coming tomorrow due to a tight schedule. Sorry about that! Meanwhile, please visit Black Girl Long Hair to check out my guest post about how I came to big chop my locs in the first place. This all has many wondering how others came to choose their current style. Sound off in the comments!
I am currently rocking a lock-hawk. And not one of those faux ones, a real one. Last August or so, I came up with the idea to chop off my locks on either side of my head and shave the sides really low. At the time, my locks were a little past shoulder length and I had been growing them for about 4 years. I wish I could say I had some hip reason for doing it, but the decisions basically came down to two things. One, I hated the edges of my hair which where constantly breaking (particularly because I preferred to pull my hair back out of my face) and always made me feel like I looked like I had a receding hairline on either side. And two, I had a child who had just turned one and I was fighting the thought of being known as “Sekou’s mommy.” So I wanted something drastically different that kept the locs I loved but did away with my concern (and shame) over my edges. Hence, the idea for the lock-hawk.
So after going back and forth with myself and some encouragement from my amazing husband, I decided to just do it. Even though I have a somewhat conservative government job, I threw caution to the wind and chopped/shaved off my locs. Now this is following a serious argument with my hairdresser who damn near refused to cut it for me for fear I would be fired!
Alsmost a year later and I have not looked back! I love my lock-hawk and I have found a multitude of ways to style it. And I think I still look very professional. I am at peace with my edges, though I remain “Sekou’s mommy” to lots of folks.
