Procrastinate on This: Friday Edition [T.E.’s Back]
Hello, hello again. I’m back! I know you must have missed me in this space terribly this summer. What was that? You didn’t even notice I’d left? And did somebody just yell, “Bring back ETC?” Why, I’ve never…
Seriously though, here’s your weekly chunk of procrastination — which ETC has chosen to weigh in on in a couple of spots. Have fun with it.
1. Everybody’s not cut out to self-publish. Author, blogger, and former bookseller, Cory Doctorow, breaks it down for you. [Locus Online]
2. Thanks to BabySmiling from “Baby Smiling in Back Seat” for sending us this slide presentation by former mathematician, current computer scientist, Terri Oda, about how supposed biological differences re math have eff-all to do with the low numbers of women in computer science. (ETC Note: As someone who switched from computer science to the arts, I’ll say that at least for me, it wasn’t about Computer Science being hard. It was about Computer Science being hard and boring. Writing is way harder in many respects, but at least it’s interesting.) [geekfeminism.org]
3. In the L.A. area? Our own Eric Sims has a show up, a little classic, you might have heard of, called COMEDY OF ERRORS by some dude named Billy Shakespeare. And even better, it’s FREE, so do make your reservation — sooner than later since it’s already 90% sold out. [Powerhouse Theatre]
4. Basically, if you’re serious about becoming a published writer, you should work hard on craft … and even harder on developing a thick skin. (ETC Note: This is so effing true. In fact I say that if you have to choose one, opt for developing a thick skin over developing craft. ). [The Newbie’s Guide to Publishing]
5. I’ve never snuck to the bathroom to check my email, but now I’m wondering how many of my friends have done this to me. Still not sure what exactly the below Tiffany Shlain doc, CONNECTED, is about, but I really want to see it.
