Project Runway Season 10: Episode 6 Real Bitches Got Curves! [Runway Rundown]

Here’s the usual warning everybody… If you haven’t watched the episode, there will be spoilers so go watch your recorded episode or catch it online, then come back and read my cheers and jeers. You can also chime in with a comment and let me know if you disagree with my little opinions, or perhaps you had something even bitchier you wanted to say about some of the rags that graced the runway this week. Now down to the nitty gritty!

In every designer’s life a little “regular people” must fall. This week it was a downpour of non-model drama with the “Real People” challenge. In seasons past we have seen mothers, brides to be, and even female wrestlers grace the runway, but this time the designers had to work with people who wanted to gift their friend with a simple make-over look. Get ready for some tears because every time they do this SOMEBODY cries.

*Cue people bitching and eyerolling about having to work with people bigger than a size zero.

The new clients were randomly assigned to the designers this week and for the most part it seems like a nice cross section of women to work with as far as size, but inevitably somebody will bitch about getting a bigger girl. Before I could even finish typing that, there was Ven complaining about his “plus size model” and making his client feel like the fattest prize cow in the land.

Okay, I’m not gonna hold back here… Ven you are a bitch. There I said it. No wait, not only are you a bitch, Ven, you are a selfish bitch.

Ven’s poor model ended up with a designer that not only didn’t want to help her try something new, he didn’t even want to be in the same room with her. Is this some form of self loathing, Ven? Last time I checked you too are a plus sized model my dear. I would have suggested you just try your garment on yourself instead of her, but at least she has a more petite waist and luckily much more personality.

After telling Tim Gunn about how he “was in shock” that his model had no shape whatsoever and no sense of style, I was so proud of Tim for trying to steer Ven back on track by explaining that this is an opportunity to help his client have an epiphany moment. Frankly, I would have just slapped him and pantsed him on national television, but Tim Gunn has a much classier approach than I when it comes to clueless, selfish, personality-less designers. (That’s why he gets paid the big bucks and I pay myself in ice cream and vodka to write these posts.)

Of all the people I expected to treat their model poorly or bitch about their size, I thought it would have been Gunnar. Boy was I wrong?! Gunnar not only showed charm, and sweetness toward his model, he made her feel like a million bucks while giving her a garment that was appropriate and flattering to a woman of her size and shape. I know… My jaw is still hanging open.

Over in Nathan’s court we got an earful about his client’s hopes to have a garment that shows her midriff in a “sophisticated” way… mhmm good luck with that lady. Hear that? That is the sound of the executioner sharpening his blade. You better talk that crazy bitch out of her slut dress aspirations my friend or just ignore her wishes altogether. Remember Nathan, there is a reason she was nominated for a make-over by her friend, and you are the designer.

Side note: What is black and white and red all over? Heidi’s awesome dress this week for the judging portion!

Most of our episode this week was seeing some fairly boring garments being made and the rest of the time I sat with my jaw on the floor watching Ven treat his client like crap. So let’s skip right to the drama on the runway!

In the top three this week we have Dmitry with a fairly forgettable blue fitted dress that was nicely tailored and fairly modern looking, but it was a bit too short for my taste.

We also had Gunnar with an adorable sheer black dress that his model rocked on the runway. While the back looked a little tight on top, she looked great and you could tell how much she loved it. This garment will obviously get a lot of wear.

Our winner this week was Fabio with his lovely little grey color blocked dress. Fabio managed to turn a normal tomboy type girl into a dress loving pixie. You can tell she will be much more adventurous in her look now that she has seen the dressing up potential. I loved this dress and it was pretty obvious the minute it hit the runway that it was this week’s clear winner.

Nobody was robbed this week, there was a lot of blah walking down that runway and lots of puckered seams… Tsk Tsk.

In the bottom three this week we had Ven (HaHa,) Nathan, and Sonjia (boo.) While Sonjia had a garment that was obviously way too short, and a bit of a bad rehashing of her knot dress, she managed to skirt by this week and end up safe.

Ven got a slap on the wrist, but frankly should have been sent home after showing a hideous pairing of a flouncy blue top with an asymetrical zippered skirt. His poor client not only had to endure wearing the ugly outfit, she was further humiliated on national TV by him every chance he got. You’ll be getting her therapy bills, Ven.

Leaving the show this week was obviously Nathan who created what Heidi referred to as a “Hoochie Mama” look. Not only did you pull off a slutty garment, Nathan, I think you just nabbed a job as a personal designer for Snookie.

Special mention of the week: Melissa’s outfit. While I liked it overall, it did kind of resemble an ensemble one would wear if they were a modern fortune teller on their way to do a reading for the Real Housewives of Orange County. Next time, ditch the giant scarf…

Next week I’m sure we will get to hear Ven continue harping about how it was unfair that he was the only designer (One of at least 3 that I counted) that got assigned a plus sized model. From the preview for next week’s episode, it appears the designers’ creations will be put into mass production and the ladies appear to struggle. *Cue more tears

While I will be out of town next week at Burning Man (You don’t even want to know about the make it work moments I have been having while making outfits for myself these last few weeks.) you should watch the show and take notes because I will be back with a full recap of both episodes in two weeks! See you soon designers, now where did I put that pink fun fur and blue el wire?!
