Oh, wow! We had a “singer from Missouri” showdown yesterday! Both Brian V from New Jersey, and Tyler P from California guessed incorrectly. Brian V thought it was Sheryl Crow, who is from Missouri, but alas, is not this singer. And Tyler P. thought it was Tracy Chapman. But Angela G from Texas guessed correctly that it was Tina Turner singing “Goldeneye” from the James Bond movie of the same name. There’s something important that I have to say now: I frickin love Tina Turner. She’s so out-of-this-world dope, that 23 years later, I still don’t get embarrassed about how I came back from summer break when I was 8, and insisted that all the other 3rd graders, my family, and my teacher call me “Tina” for a whole week. True story. Getting back to the lyrics, though. Which Norwegian blond bad-ass sang this: I’m gonna tell you how it’s gonna get done I’m just a girl that’s only chewing for fun You spit it out when all the flavour has gone Wrap him round your finger like you’re playing with gum Guesses in the comments. And I’ll see you tomorrow to talk about you. Til then, check out Tina Turner, in a slinky silver dress and a piled-high blong wig in the “Goldeneye” video. It’s after the...

So yesterday Monique from New Jersey guessed correctly that KRS-One was behind Thursday’s Lyric. Today, in honor of me deciding decisively to finish the second draft of my book, I’m using a song that’s featured prominently in it. Which English pop group put forth this drippy relationship metaphor: The rain water drips through a crack in the ceiling and i’ll have to spend my time on repair But just like the rain i’ll be always falling, yeah only to rise and fall again Totally Unconnected Sidenote: This song showed up in the Genius Bar playlist that was formed when I selected the song “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).” Guesses in the comments. And I’ll talk with you Monday about the answer. Til then, enjoy the KRS-One “Step Into a World” video after the...

So yesterday, Vince P actually guessed correctly that Wednesday’s Guess The Lyric was “All Mine” by Portishead first. But he didn’t leave his guess in the comments, so then Zack from Tall Glass of Shame swooped in and got the glory. It was a bit of a soap opera. That all rundown, who angrily managed to brag and flame the record industry with this line: I’m not sayin I’m number one, uhh I’m sorry, I lied I’m number one, two, three, four and five Stop wastin your money on marketing schemes and pretty packages pushin dreams to the beams A dope MC is a dope MC With or witout a record deal, all can see Guesses in the comments. And I’ll see you tomorrow to discuss the answer. Til then, here’s the “All Mine” video. Warning, the video is just as gloriously unsettling as the song. Many of you know how I feel about English children, and this video proves my point about them being seriously creepy really well. See what I mean after the...

So Brian from New Jersey guessed correctly that Friday’s Guess The Lyric was “Head Over Heels” by Tears for Fears. Now, which still kickin’ Scottish singer/songwriter sang this — I’m still not sure that this isn’t a veiled reference to Mary Jane: I’m just mad about Saffron. Saffron’s mad about me. I’m-a just mad about Saffron. She’s just mad about me. Guesses in the comments. And here’s one of my favorite videos from the 80’s to go along with one of my favorite songs from the 80’s after the...

Wow, I so thought none of you guys were awesome enough to now the early oeveure of Andrew W.K. But apparently Zacki from Los Angeles also appreciates the finer things in life — like new millenium hair metal with a kick-ass guitar. He guessed correctly that Thursday’s Guess the Random Lyric was “Party Hard” by Andrew W.K. So as we go into the weekend, we’ve got a Random Lyric from one of my favorite songs of all time. Here’s a small clue. The title of this song has already been mentioned in one of this week’s Fierce and Nerdy blogposts, because it was the same title used by another group, who put out their track a year beforehand. Anyway that all rather convolutedly stated, who sang: I’m lost in admiration Could I need you this much? Guesses in the comments. And I’ll post the answer on Monday. Til then, here’s the Andrew W.K. video that is not allowed to be seen in the American South after Labor Day, even though he insists his outfit is “winter whites.” Video after the jump: Andrew Wk – Party Hard Uploaded by...
