Buy Your Geek This: A Big Screen TV
.
A blogumn by CH
As a guy who spends all day at work worried about how a television looks I get asked a lot about the best big screen HD TV.
First and most importantly you need to upgrade your cable or direct TV or antenna. I have gone to friend’s houses that have spent big money on a HD TV only to plug it into their existing cable box. This is like buying a sports car and then only using first gear. Just call your service provider and tell them you are upgrading to a HD TV. They will tell you what you need to make the signal HD. If you are not connecting your TV with a HDMI cable or Composite Video it is not HD. When you buy the TV you will need to buy a HDMI or Composite cable. However, don’t let them sell you a over priced monster cable when you can buy a generic cable at a much better price.
So now you are ready to buy a TV.
There are three types of TV to chose from Rear Projection, Plasma, or LCD.
First Rear Projection. I own a rear projection TV, and if I needed a TV today this is what I would get:
.
Click on the photo of each TV and it will take you to the Amazon page of the TV I would buy.

.
When you want to go big, nothing beats a rear-projector. They have gotten a lot smaller over the last couple of years, but they still provide the most screen real estate for your buck. Look for DLP technology.
The Down side is They don’t do well in a bright room and you can’t mount them on a wall.
.
.
.
The Next type is Plasma:
Plasmas can be as little as 3″ thick and have very good picture quality. This is what I see most on TV shows that care about how the picture looks. If I had no cares about price, this is the TV I would buy.
The down side is they eat a lot of power and they are subject to residual image burn in.
.
.
.
The Final type is LCD.
LCD is by far the most common flat screen you see today and if you are a smart shopper you can find a quality LCD TV at a good price.
The downside is that the image quality is not as good as Plasma and it also has a narrow viewing angle.

.
And for way more info than you probably ever wanted to know about HD TV’s go here.

Haha. People ask me *alllllllllll* the time, what kind of TV should i get. I’m like “Honestly, I just make this shit. I have no idea.” I’m woefully undereducated on the end product. So thanks for the buyers guide :-)

My husband has a 50″ plasma and he loves it! And ladies, no worries it actually looks great hung above the fireplace and flanked by African Masks! See, it can be both stylish and functional!
