Dear Thursday: Let’s Get Ready for 2010…
… by going over 2009 ad nauseum. As the new year gets closer, I thought it would be a good idea to use our entertainment space to figure out our nominations for the Best and Worst Entertainment of the year, starting off with TV. Here are my nominations…
Best New TV Show of 2009: Hands down Modern Family. Such a lovely surprise with the added benefit that both my husband and my MIL like it, too. I already told you everything I love about this show here, so I won’t rehash — just encourage everyone to watch.
Best Returning TV Show of 2009: Big Bang Theory is pretty much the only show I make sure to watch on the same night it broadcasts and the character of Sheldon is pure comic genius. Plus they helped me towards hating Wil Wheaton even more than I already did.
Worst New TV Show of 2009: V. I wanted to love it, but it is SO boring and ham-handed. Also, it can’t decide whether it wants to be derivative of Lost or derivative of Battlestar Galatica, which just makes it a derivative mess.
Worst Returning TV Show of 2009: I want to say Heroes, but I took back my dignity and finally forced myself to stop watching it this year. So I’ll just say Scrubs, b/c it refuses to effin die already. If Scrubs were my boyfriend, I would have been dumped him … and filed a restraining order.
So now it’s your turn. Please nominate shows for each of these categories in the comments and at the end of the year, we’ll put the top two in every category to a vote. Fun, right?
Agree with you on all points, except Scrubs, since I never really watched it. Modern Family is near perfect, and has amazing talent. Parenthood is going to have a hard time coming in late to the party wearing the same costume.
Possibly worse than V, however, is Three Rivers.
I wanted to like it because it's set in Pittsburgh, but man, those fake multi-touch medical computer screens, bad acting, and all-around cheesy direction make it almost funny. And I don't think that is what they are going for.
Has a show set in Pittsburgh ever succeeded? Remember that one "The Guardian" with Simon Baker?

Can. Not. Watch. V. Man I wanted to love it, because I dorked out on the original when I was a teeny child. But whenever I try to sit through a scene, I just envision some guy at an old school typewriter pounding out deadly dialogue with a hammer. So awful, it' is truly unwatchable.
Fav returned show is Fringe. Love that mad scientist and such clever, new ideas. I hope it lives on and isn't destroyed by alien "Visitors"
Fav new show is Community, it's slowly growing on me. The scripts where Joel McHale isn't a douche are actually funny and Chevy Chase pulls off his character well. I like Modern Family, but haven't set up the Tivo on it yet, so have missed alot
The one returning show I wish would just crawl into the grave already? Two and a Half friggin Men. Gawd awful (probably written by the 'comedy' writing brother of the V writers) Kudo's btw on quitting Heroes. I keep trying, but they they suck me in every now and again with some good writing for Hiro. He's the only good thing on the show.
I've only seen Two and a Half Men in re-run, but it's from Chuck Lorre, who's also behind Big Bang Theory, so that occasionally makes me want to give it a chance, but not really, since they don't have any people of color on the show that I can see and right now the only shows I'm making an exception for in that regard is "How I Met Your Mother" and "Days of Our Lives" (b/c my MIL loves it).

You are sooooo right about the worse shows (I haven't seen the ones that you think are the best but I do have two co-workers who love Big Bang Theory and you would think I would be watching it since I work in the tech sector).
V is just ugh. I have no words. Ok yes I do–I watched the pilot and it was like going into a bookstore, picking up a book that you think is going to be really interesting because you like the cover but you discover the book starts at chapter 10 then skips to chapter 32 AND it is badly written. Are ya going to buy that book? Hell Naw.
Heroes is just making me sad. I don't even know why I am hanging on. It's like breaking up with a boyfriend but you keep occasionally getting together but your aren't technically a couple anymore and you feel horrible after you spent time with him. I am desperate for something to watch on Hulu so I watch Heroes and it is fustrating. I am tired of the Carnies (every week I want to post this on my Facebook page) and still don't understand WHY they are around or frankly who the heck they are!!! What is the whole point of the deaf doctor who didn't finish her residency who can see sound? Either do something with your figgin' ability or would somebody please kill her off so that I can be put out of my misery. Clearly Peter is too busy trying to save people to get some so I think she can go. Heroes is not Gossip Girl– have Claire in a torrid steamy lesbain relationship with her roommate or just move on. Even horned rimmed glasses guy is depressed this season! Probably because he has nothing to do. I can't take it. Calgon take me away!!!
On the flip side I love me some Fringe. I live for Walter. He cracks me up. Still in love with Gossip Girl. Can't wait for Vampire Diaries but I think if they use the word "epic" one more time I might have to launch a protest to get it removed from the english language. And I think the break out star of the fall is Glee. I'm putting a ring on that one.

You obviously don't read Wil Wheaton's blog. He is awesome. C'mon, his motto is, "Don't be a dick."
I don't have time to watch bad shows, even when I was stuck on bedrest for months. Show that I enjoy most right now: It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
