Dear Thursday: London Theater vs. Here Theater
I’ve been telling people for years that the London theater scene is better than ours, and apparently Ken Davenport over at “Producer’s Perspective” agrees with me. Go here to see his full list, but here are three of my faves from his list:
.
1. STANDING OVATIONS ARE HARDER TO COME BY.
.
3. YOU CAN EAT AND DRINK ANYTHING IN THE THEATERS.
.
7. YOU CAN BUY ADVANCE DISCOUNT TICKETS AT TKTS.
I would add to this list that London audiences skew way younger, and cheap tickets are much easier to come by. While I was over there the first time, I was able to see, Rent, Noises Off (way better in British, btw), and a Noel Coward play starring Alan Rickman for under $100. I wish theater over here was anywhere near as accessible to general audiences.
Still, this won’t stop me from catching a show or two when I travel to NYC in September to meet up with my agent and editor. Any suggestions about what I should see? Sadly, breastfeeding pretty much rules out the Fierce and Nerdy endorsed and booze-heavy Rock of Ages.
I LOVE LONDON THEATRE!!! They really are smarter, as that article states. And you feel smarter after you attend a show there. I was able to get floor seats to a show for about $30 US!!! COME ON!!! And it was a great show…. Did I mention that show was "Jerry Springer: The Opera?" I had an amazing experience. Audience members talked to me at intermission and after the show…about theatre! IMAGINE!!!!! OK, I am a big drama nerd and cried when touring the Globe Theatre, so I guess I am biased. But it was one of the highlights of my life. Nerd!!!
When in NYC, looks like the must see ticket is Billy Elliott and if you've never seen Spring Awakening you must, must, must!!!! And I would guess that breast-feeding is actually encouraged at Rock of Ages! ; )

I have been to NYC and London a few times and I agree London theatre is better. It's hard for me to say why but I always feel like the shows are better and cheaper in London.

I have not seen London theatre, but I am confused, because NYC has two TKTS booths (one used to be in the WTC) and tickets are half-priced. I guess it is just for the DAY of, though and not advanced.
You MUST see "Rock of Ages". It started here in LA and I saw it the night I met JD. I would love to see what changes they have made to it, now that it is on Broadway, but it was cool, because we sat at a little table and ate and drank!
