One More Thing Before We Go: Fictional Men We Love
I found this list from Jezebel in response to WSJ’s list of fictional men real women can love in response to Edward Cullen’s (Twilight) popularity interesting — mostly because I can’t think of many fictional men that I would like to be with in real life.
I find the WSJ’s top pick, Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, too uncommunicative. Huck Finn (one of Jezebel’s picks) seems too impulsive. And even Edward Cullen frustrates me in that I don’t really understand falling desperately in love with someone as frustrating as Bella simply because she smells really good.
If I had to pick a fictional guy to love, I’d probably go with David from Tananarive Due’s African Immortals series (My Soul to Keep, The Living Blood, Blood Colony) b/c he’s smart, experienced, capable, yet incredibly human — despite being immortal. However, he’s also really dangerous — so that’s a drawback.
How about you? What fictional guy would you choose if you had to have a love affair between the pages?
.
Yep. Edward Cullen. Sad, but true.

Roland Deschain, hands down my love & hero…. (Dark Tower series, Stephen King)

Mr. Darcy!! I am totally on board that train. But I think it's a combination of loving the character and loving Colin Firth. However, in my youth I had a fictional crush on Lestat, so I guess I understand the Edward Cullen thing…though I've never read the books.

I actually like Roland, too. But I doubt he'd give up the Tower to settle down.

Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre, but preferably before the infirmities. Henry from Time Travelers Wife except for that one pesky detail.
Ooh, I liked Henry, too! Sexy Librarian — nice!

My list: Edward Cullen (Cynthia Crossen needs to read the whole Twilight series 'cause she ain't got all her facts straight about Edward), Mr. Darcy, Col. Brandon (he was just old to Marianne because he was like 30 plus she was clearly stupid and my equivalent of his gift of a piano would be him bringing me a new plasma ). Humm, I guess I was born at the wrong time considering all my fictional love interests are 19th and 20th century men.

Oh, yes — add Colonel Brandon to my list. Come to think of it, any of Jane Austen's leading men are dreamboats.

When I was about 20, my friend Daria told me over lunch in the cafeteria: "You remind me of Mr Darcy." I was, of course, deeply flattered.
But then in my early, late 30's (about 2 years ago), I confessed to my shrink: "There comes a moment when you realize you're more Mr. Collins [he of the proposal to Lizzy] than Mr Darcy."
