Video Review – Star Trek Into Darkness
Lexington P. Monoclesworth leads the crew of the Starship Enterprise into darkness…for a while.
Another solid summer blockbuster, what gives? Either I’m going soft (ahem) or this year is starting off rather pleasantly.
Spoiler Alert 2/3rds in but marked appropriately.
SPOILER ALERT: SPOLIERS UP THE ASS HERE: Sorry man, I loved. Completely dug the swap between Kirk and Spock. In fact, had it not been such an emotional and serious moment, would have laughed at Spock screaming, “Khaaaaaaan!” instead of Kirk. My only complaint was the beginning of the flick when Kirk suddenly finds himself the 1st officer (briefly). Why not just bust him down to Commander but still in command of his ship? As a former Naval member, Captain is largely a ceremonial title and anyone of any rank can wear it. It would have shown Kirk as non-indestructible while still maintaining he got slapped in the pee-pee. Shit alcohol is everywhere! Anyways, furthermore, it seemed more like Kirk was looking for a way to prove himself to dead Admiral Pike rather than initially having the qualities of self-sacrifice within himself to begin with. In Wrath of Khan, Spock and Kirk never engaged in a prefaced conversation about one another’s commitment to the situation. Spock saw a problem, and saw his life as a small pittance compared to the alternative. Kirk however, almost seemed eager to jump into the warp core to prove his honor. I guess it is nitpicking, but could have done without the guilt trip in the beginning, offered by Admiral Pike and instead just seen Kirk act on instinct as Spock did in the original. Lastly, my wife and I were discussing what this means for future possible Khan interactions? Does this mean rather than Khan dedicating his life to destroying Kirk, that he know is hell bent on destroying Spock? That seems logical given the ending of this film and certainly adds a wrinkle to the new game this new series has presented us with. I actually think a second viewing will give added depth to the film for me. Also, since no one else is mentioning it, the Klingon depiction (both in their ships design and makeup) is frakking awesome. Can’t wait for the next one.
Okay now realize there was a small conversation regarding the many outweighing the weak, but it wasn’t in a judgemental “You’re an assclown” tone this movie had with the Pike-Kirk relationship.
