Oh, It’s Tuesday: Gotdang Library Fines!

Aug 03, 2010 24 Comments by

So I’m dreading going to the library today, because I’ve once again managed to amass large overdue fines –this time while I was out on book tour. I think there are two types of people in this world, those who amass library fines and those who don’t go to the library at all. I simply can’t believe that there is anyone in between. But maybe I’m wrong? Maybe you’re one of those mythical people who have actually managed to both check out books and not have to regularly pay fees on them? If so, please tell me how you managed to achieve such a feat, so that I may teach my daughter to appreciate reading, without having her end up in a bunch of library debt like me. Sad face.

I haven't gone to the library because I accidently returned a book in the mail box instead of the book box! Whoops! I'm dreading seeing how much I owe.

Hahaha! I laugh only because that sound EXACTLY like something I would do…

This is actually why I do not use the library. I could never get things back on time and I actually ended up amassing some significant penalties. So now if I want to read something or listen to an audio book, I buy it (in the end when you add in the fines I am actually saving money). I rarely end up at the library at all these days.

Come back, Monique! At least the fines go to a much-needed community service!

I am that mythical creature…now. Big ups to the Santa Monica Public Library for sending an auto-generated email reminder to me 2 days before my books are due.

Back in Chicago, however, I had to wait for the annual "grace" day to bring back my stacks because I held on to stuff. Isn't there a max on what you pay? The amount the book is worth or some such?

I get an auto-generated reminder, I just forget that I got the auto-generated reminder. Then I feel guilty if I drive as opposed to walk to the library b/c it's so ridiculously close. The point being, I'm trifling and you're not.

Seattle has an email system as well. It also helps that the main library is across the street from my office. Although, somehow, I managed to rack up a 10 cent fine once. Curses!

I would LOVE to have the library right across the street. We actually seriously considered buying a house right across the street from our local library, but the owners were crazy, so we settled for renting w/n walking distance.

How does $115 sound as a fine? That's what I had to pay for my overdue books. Wah! I reckon an iPhone app is the way forward (as yet non-existent).

Fiona, I had my diploma held in college because I owed the library over $300 in fines. And yes, I can't wait until "there's an app for that."

I'm an avid reader and my eldest daughter is one, too! Surprisingly enough, we have managed to keep the fees down to no more than $5.00 every other month or so. That is really good for us, considering how many books (I'm a teacher and I have 3 other children) we check out.

Maybe that's the answer. Going to the library even more. I like that solve!
