GTRL Monday: Miike Snow

Man, I miss me some GTRL and can’t wait til have time to play it with you guys again in September. Meanwhile, I thought you my enjoy my new obsession, Swedish band, Miike Snow, who are touring the US as we speak. You might have already heard the remix of their song “Burial” in this Palm commercial, and I’ve  posted the original for you after the...

Philosophical Monday: GTRL on Summer Hiatus [Listen to the Wave Machines!]...

Hey Guys! I adore GTRL. It was the very first thing I ever wrote for Fierce and Nerdy. But unfortunately, the closer I get to the book launch the less time I have. And since after cutting GTRL last week, the numbers not only didn’t suffer, but also went up to the point that we couldn’t post on Monday, b/c we were out of bandwidth, I decided that I needed to put GTRL on a Summer Hiatus. So that’s the bad news. The good news is we’ve got a whole mess of great things coming at you this summer, and GTRL will be back in September, just like school. Till then I’ll try to hep you to more of the music I’m listening, so that you guys won’t be so stymied every time I post something that came out after the 90s. Let’s start with the Liverpoolian group, the Wave Machines. I discovered “Keep the Lights On” on the plane to France and Scotland back in April, and promptly became obsessed with it. I downloaded the whole album almost as soon as I landed back in the States, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the whole album was very listenable — especially if you like I, went to “lounges” in the your early 20s. Anywho, here’s the song that kicked off the love. Let me know what you think of them in the...

Blame LOST For No GTRL This Week

This is killing me, b/c I know there’s a certain contingent of our readers who stops by everyday just for GTRL, but I lost my husband to a LOST special this entire weekend, so I just didn’t have the hours to work on FaN that I usually do. Funnily enough, putting together GTRL is the most time-consuming daily post outside of my personal blogumn, so I had to let it go this week. But we’ll be back next week. Please...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me= 4 1/2; You= 4 1/2

Alright, here’s where we’re at coming into the end of our week’s worth of overtime: no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Halo” by Beyonce, and now we’re TIED going into 70s or 80s Friday. Wow, first overtime and now we’re ending the week with a total nail biter! I have so many favorite one-hit wonders, but this is probably my favorite from the 80s, and I still think the shaggy dark-haired singer is like soooo cute. That’s all. As shadows fall, I pass a small cafe where we would dance at night. And I can’t help recalling how it how it felt to kiss and hold you tight Guesses in the comments and Beyonce and Michael Ealy after the jump: \...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=4 1/2; Me=3 1/2

Ah crap, keldoo from “Fierce in Seattle” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Beautiful Stranger” by Madonna as sung for Austin Powers: The Spy That Shagged Me, and now you’re ahead going into Black Artist Thursday. I bet anyone who’s ever fallen in love after a few bitter break ups recognized the magic in the song immediately. So not surprised that it ended up being a top ten song, even though it was the albums third single. Who sang: It’s like I’ve been awakened Every rule I had you breakin’ Guesses in the comments and one of the many 90s versions of Madonna after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=3 1/2; You=3 1/2

Yay! No one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Shut Up and Let Me Go” by The Ting Tings and now we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday. What a nail biter! I often wonder if I rewatched the three movies that this quintessential 90s character spawned if I’d find them quite as funny. Either way, I still love this song, which was made for this movie back when A-list artists we’re still willing to make songs specifically for movies. You’re the devil in disguise That’s why I’m singing this song Guesses in the comments and is it me but does the Ting Tings chyck look like a really cool version of Natasha...

Procrastinate on This! MATRIX Meets THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE…...

… is how I imagine this Matt Damon/Emily Blunt movie was pitched. But it still looks really intriguing. I’d see it in a...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=3 1/2; Me=2 1/2

Alright, Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Cuban Pete” by Desi Arnaz and now we’re at Random Tuesday. Of all the indie acts that hit it big in America in 2008 this was my favorite female-male duo. Your jeans were once so clean  I bet you changed your wardrobe since we met Guesses in the comments and Desi Arnaz KILLS it after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2 1/2; Me=2 1/2

Well, keldoo guessed that Friday’s lyric was from “Radar Love” and angela from Texas co-signed with the group: Golden Earring, so that means we’re in for a week’s worth of overtime. Deep sigh. Okay, well let’s get this re-started with Standard Monday. Basically this Latin standard is alredy one of Betty’s all-time favorites. Don’t ask, just tell me who sang… So senorita please Take it easy, do it with ease Guesses in the comments and Golden Earring straight outta the 70s after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2 1/2; You=1 1/2

Well, here’s the situation going into 70s or 80s Friday: no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Turn My Swag On” by Soulja Boy, and now I’m either going to win this thang OR we’re going to go into a week’s worth of overtime. Of course I’m hoping for the former, but let’s see. Basically when I think 70s booty-call, I think about this song: I’ve been drivin‘ all night my hand’s wet on the wheel There’s a voice in my head that drives my heel Guesses in the comments, and Soulja Boy is all sorts of under-21 ridiculous after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You: 1 1/2; Me: 1 1/2

Alrighty, Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Iko Iko,” but she didn’t get the group that sang it, which was The Belle Stars, so now we’re still tied going into Black Artist Thursday. I was thinking the other day how I love to represent for the stuff I love like my city, my blog, my friends, and my family, and this song came to mind. And yes, it is so on my workout mix. What-what! I put my team on, did my theme song Now it’s time to turn it up, yeah, yeah Guesses in the comments and straight from the 80s, here’s the first version I ever heard of “Iko Iko” after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=1

Okay, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “This Kiss” by the 90s’ Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, and now we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday. This New Orleans staple has been featured on so many soundtracks that I’ll just go ahead and take the song’s name and any of its cover artists for the full point. I bet you five dollars he’ll kill you dead Guesses in the comments and Faith Hill, cute as a 90s button can be found...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Well, in a stunning act of two-times-in-a-row betrayal, Amy from “Tall Drink of Nerd” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “(It Was) A Very Good Year” as sung by William Shatner, and now we’ve arrived at Random Tuesday. You know what we haven’t featured on GtRL for a while? That’s right, country! Who sang this cheestastic wonder from the 90s? But you got me like a rocket Shooting straight across the sky Guesses in the comments and heres William Shatner FT(em-effin)W with “A Very Good...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=3; Me=2

Ugh!!!!! Amy Robinson from “Tall Drink of Nerd” swooped in with her stoopid hard rock tastes and guessed that Friday’s lyric was from “Jungle Love” by The Steve Miller Band. So p.o.ed as I thought I was going to win it. You guys are mean! But I’m shaking it off with a new week, starting with at little challenge, I like to call “Anybody But Sinatra,” as in name anybody but Sinatra who sang a version of this song: But now the days grow short  I’m in the autumn of my years  And I think of my life as vintage wine Guesses in the comments and Steve Miller rocking a pink suit in Germany (as you must) after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=2

Okay, here’s the situation going into 70s or 80s Friday: Zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “If” by Janet Jackson, so now we’re tied. I heard this song on the radio the other day and thought to myself, what’s the chance that a white 70s band and a black 80s band — both of which had probably never actually been to a place like the one referenced in their respective ditties — would have a hit song with the same random title? Anyways, this next one is by the white 70s band. You treat me like I was your ocean You swim in my blood when it's warm Guesses in the comments and Janet Jackson makes Japanese clubs seem way cooler and sexier than they actually are after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=1

Alrighty, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Growing Up” as sung at the end of the The Worst Witch, which not only starred Charlotte Rae from the The Facts of Life, but was also one of my favorite movies from the 80s. And here’s one of my favorite songs of the 90s. Seriously, what 90s teen didn’t have to either watch or dance to a routine set to this jam back in the day? How many nights I’ve laid in bed excited over you I’ve closed my eyes and thought of us, A hundred different ways Guesses in the comments, and the perfect end to the perfect movie (if you’re like 8) after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=1

Okay, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Back on the Chain Gang” by The Pretenders, and now we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday. I’m only referencing this 80’s British television movie because I know I’m not the only one who watched it every single Halloween … or memorized all the lyrics to this end title song. I’ll take the movie’s name and the name of the sitcom star who played the main villain in the film for the full point. Growing up isn’t easy Scared of every move you make Guesses in the comments, and Chrissy Hynde in a sweet mullet after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

So DebraB from “Two Cats and a Baby” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “I Could Have Danced All Night” as sung by Julie Andrews in My Fair Lady. And now we’re at Random Tuesday. I often wonder who would win in a fight between Joan Jett and the lead singer of this next song’s band. I mean they’re just both so tough! What hijacked my world that night To a place in the past Guesses in the comments and Audra McDonald makes you forget that she’s on Private Practice after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=2 1/2; Me=2

Dangit! Thanks to Amy from “Tall Drink of Nerd” guessing correctly that the Thursday before last’s lyric was from “Feelin’ Good” by Nina Simone you beat me by one measly half-point in our Scottish and French Music Theme week. But I’m back in America now, so this week, there will be no theme for you to lean on. First up, Showtune Monday. This song of delight kept running through my head while I was in Paris for some reason, perhaps b/c it pretty much defines having a grand time. Bed! Bed! I couldn’t go to bed!  My head’s too light to try to set it down! Guesses in the comments and Nina Simone feeling good in this wonderful fan video/art class project after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=1 1/2[Scottish and French Week]

So we’re at Black Artist Thursday, which will be the last GTRL of the month, thanks to my travels to Scotland and France, which kick off today. Yesterday no one guessed correctly that the lyric was from “Signal Fire” by Snow Patrol, so it all comes down to today. For the win, this chyck ain’t French but like quite a few African-Americans from a certain civil-rights-challenged era, France is the place that she called home. Who most famously sang… Sleep in peace when day is done That’s what I mean Guesses in the comments and this Snow Patrol video makes me wonder what kind of glasses Betty will be wearing in 4-6 years tops. Poor kid, both her parents have terrible eyes. She really doesn’t stand a chance of getting graced with anything approaching 20/20...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=1 1/2 [Scottish and French Week]

Alright, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “One More Time” by Daft Punk and now we’re at Soundtrack Wednesday in our special Scottish and French edition of GTRL. This Scottish band had a huge hit back in 2006 and was tapped for a Spiderman 3 single soon after — however, this song didn’t do nearly as well. Who sang… All I wanted just sped right past me,  While I was rooted fast to the earth Guesses in the comments and Daft Punk get animated after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1 1/2; Me=0 [Scottish and French Week]

So zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Almost Like Being In Love” as sung by Gene Kelly in the movie version of Brigadoon, and now we’re moving on to Random Tuesday. As you might have noticed, I rarely feature songs from the oughts on this blog, but I love this French act so much that I decided to make an exception: You know I’m gonna do it alright  Tonight  Hey, just feelin’  Music’s coming feelin’ on me Guesses in the comments, and who knew Florence Henderson had such a nice voice after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=3 1/2; Me=1 1/2

Alright, proving that we’ve got a readership of Disney nerds, not only did angela from Texas guess correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “Kiss the Girl” as sung by Sebastian in The Little Mermaid, but DebraB from “Two Cats and a Baby” guessed correctly that last weeks Hidden Theme was DISNEY. That means you get to go into our Scottish and French Week (our last GTRL week of the month due to my upcoming trip to yes, Scotland and France) with a 1/2 point advantage. Let’s do this! For those of you who knew me back in my theater reviewer days in Pittsburgh, this was the first musical that I ever gave a bad review. Sadly, it would not be the last — or even the worst. But I quite liked the movie version, and I’ll take the name of the song, plus the male lead for the full point: Maybe the air gave me the drive, For I’m all aglow and alive. Guesses in the comments and Sebastian sets the mood after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You 2 1/2; Me 1 1/2

Here’s where we’re at going into 70s or 80s Friday: DebraB guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Whole New World” but didn’t get either of its singers: Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. So it all comes down to today with 70 or 80s Friday in our Hidden Theme Week. Sadly, when I think of Jamaican songs, this is the one that comes to mind first. Please don’t judge me. I didn’t discover Bob Marley until the 90s. Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do. Possible she wants you, too. Guesses in the comments and Peabo and Regina after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=1

Alrighty, Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Circle of Life” as sung by Elton John in The Lion King, and now you’re ahead going into Black Artist Thursday of our Hidden Theme Week. I’ll take only one of the duet that sang this next song, and I’m guessing you’ll guess the one with the pretty cool name: Every turn a surprise  With new horizons to pursue Guesses in the comments and a new baby is rather dramatically welcomed after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=1

Okay, well my SIL, angela from Texas guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Son of Man” by Phil Collins as sung for Tarzan, and now we’re at Soundtrack Wednesday in our Hidden Theme week. Whenever I think of babies, I pretty much think of this song: There’s far too much to take in here More to find than can ever be found Guesses in the comments and Tarzan grows up after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=0

Woo-hoo! No one guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “No Matter What” from the Beauty and the Beast stage show. Next up in our Hidden Theme week, Random Tuesday. I’ve no shame in saying that this is one of my favorite artists of the 80s — he is truly cheesetastic. And I thoroughly enjoyed this song from a 90s movie, which featured the 90s most famous lesbian. On this journey that you’re making There’ll be answers that you’ll seek And it’s you who’ll climb the mountain It’s you who’ll reach the peak Guesses in the comments and Belle asks her father if she’s odd after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=3; Me=2

Ugh! BabySmiling from “Baby Smiling in the Back Seat” swooped in on Saturday and guessed correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “Breaking Us In Two” by Joe Jackson and so you guys won the week. Won’t even go into how upset I am about this, as I had spent a whole day and a half, thinking I was going to win. Bah!!!! Anyway, I thought this would be a good week to do a hidden theme. All of the songs have one thing in common this week. And if you guess correctly what it is, you’ll get an extra half-point to take with you into next week, which will actually be our last GTRL week of the month, since I’ll be leaving for Scotland after that. So here goes our Hidden Theme week, starting with Showtune Monday. Funnily enough, this song is from he only musical that I’ve seen on both coasts: once on Broadway and once in Solvang. I’ll take the name of the song and the name of the musical for the full point. And if my point of view Is somewhat misty-eyed There’s nothing clearer in my life Than what I wish and feel for you And that’s a lot… Guesses in the comments and Joe Jackson after the jump. I had forgotten how aggressively boring this video is. I doubt any of you will have the attention span to get through it, but let me know in the comments if you actually...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=2

So no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Confessions Pt. 2” by Usher and now we’re tied going into 70s or 80s Friday. Who will win the week? We shall see! This guy was huge in England in the 80s but only slightly appreciated over here — maybe b/c he was really skinny and balding. Either way, this song always makes me sad, like I’m the one about to go through a split. Though it’s oh so nice to get advice It’s oh so hard to do Guesses in the comments and Usher makes a confession that really should get him broken up with, except he’s Usher, after the...

Guess the Random Lyrics: You=1; Me=1

Okay, Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Tribute” by Tenacious D. So now we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday. I was talking with Kelly from “Nerd in Transition” about how much I loved this show, but how it so didn’t hold up over time. I’ll take the name of the show and the real name of the person who played the title character after the jump: Maybe the world is blind,  Or just a little unkind Guesses in the comments and Tenacious D tells us about the best song in the world after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=0

Alrighty, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “A World on a String” by Michael Buble. But maybe you can come back today. Let’s see with Random Tuesday. This, in my opinion, was the best comedy song of 2002. That is all. Look into my eyes and it’s easy to see One and one make two, two and one make three, it was destiny Guesses in the comments and Michael Buble live at Madison Garden after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=3; Me=2

Okay, you narrowly won last week thanks to angela from Texas guessing correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “Girls, Girls, Girls” by Motley Crue. But it’s a new week, which means a new chance for me to kick your proverbial butt. Let’s do this! Starting with Standard Monday. I’ll take anyone but Frank Sinatra for this one: I’d be a silly so-and-so If I should ever let you go Guesses in the comments and the first (but sadly not the last) strip club video I’ve ever saw after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=2

Here’s the situation going into 70s or 80s Friday of our Misogynist Songs That We Like Anyway Week: no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Gimme That” by Webbie, so now we’re tied and it all comes down to today. Who will win? We shall seeeeeee! I’ve tried to think back to the first misogynist song that I can remember liking, and as far as I know, this one is it. Oh, the 80s… I’m such a good good boy I just need a new toy Guesses in the comments and Webbie presented without comment after he...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=1

So Zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Bless Your Beautiful Hide” as sung (quite jauntily) by Howard Keel in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and now you’re ahead going into Black Artist Thursday of our Misogynist Songs That We Like Anyway Week. As you probably already guessed, there was a ton of competition for this slot, but in the end I decided to go with the guy who later went on to have a big hit with what could be considered a feminist anthem. But BEFORE THAT he rapped… You know you want it  Girl dont act like you don’t want it Guesses in the comments and Howard Keel searching for a wife after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=1

Okay, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Girls” by the Beastie Boys, and now we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday of Misogynist Songs That I Like Anyway Week. I don’t think women are interchangeable as long as they’re hot and can cook, yet I often find myself humming this song as I go about my day. Who sang: Pretty and trim but kinda slim. Heavenly eyes but oh that size, Guesses in the comments and it doesn’t look like the Beastie Boys made a video for their most venerable song, but you can listen to it below: Girls – The Beastie...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

So Jenny from Cali guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Luck Be A Lady” as sung by Marlon Brando (rather badly) in Guys and Dolls. But let’s see if I can come back with Random Tuesday in our Misogynist Songs I Love Anyway Week. This song actually makes stereotyping and oversexualizing women a lot of fun, and I can’t help but dance in my car seat every time it comes on the radio — which is disturbingly often despite the advances that women have made. I heard she moved real far away That was two years ago this May Guesses in the comments and Marlon Brando lays it all out on crap shoot after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Your Perfect Week

Well, you guys must be a bunch of woman-singer-lovin folks, b/c thanks to Baby Smiling from “Baby Smiling in Back Seat” guessing correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “Different Drum” by Linda Ronstadt, you guys (really gals, b/c it was an all-woman mow down) managed to pull off a perfect week with a final score of You=5;Me=0. There won’t be a repeat of that this week. In fact, I decided that since you did so well with our Women’s History Month Challenge that I should use this week to highlight Misogynist Songs That We Love Anyway. Mwah-ha-ha-ha! First up Showtune Monday. Now this little is actually the least misogynist song of the week, but it does objectify women in a rather meta way as well as impose a few “nice girl” standards — of which I’ve never been a fan. I’m look for the guy that sang this song in the movie (badly): So let’s keep the party polite  Never get out of my sight Guesses in the comments and Linda Ronstadt dumps a guy with some really awesome lyrics (which were actually penned by Michael Nesmith from the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=4; Me=0

Well, despite my ringing condemnation earlier this week, my SIL, angela decided to guess correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “I Try” by Macy Gray, and now you guys are staring down a perfect week. Can you do it? Let’s see! We’re concluding our Women’s History Month challenge with 70s or 80s Friday. Okay, this is one of my favorite audacious “I’m breaking up with you” ditties of all time, and I wish women were still singing songs like this. Who sang… You cry and moan and say it will work out But honey child I’ve got my doubts You can’t see the forest for the trees Guesses in the comments and hey — I forgot that Macy Gray used to rock a blowout. Check it out after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=3; Me=0

Oh noes! Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “What A Feeling” by Irene Cara. So now you’ve already won the week going into Black Artist Thursday. Ah well, I look forward to beating you soundly next week. Meanwhile, this artist’s first album was a huge hit and her follow-ups were not. I don’t want to say “leave dem drugs alone” — but in this case I suspect it might be true. Who sang… I believe that fate has brought us here And we should be together, babe Guesses in the comments and Hello, Jennifer Beals! after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=0

So this is how you spell betrayal: a.n.g.e.l.a. aka my SIL, who  guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Ice Cream” by Sarah McLachlan and pushed you ahead going into Soundtrack Wednesday. Hiss! This chyck can be found on not one, but TWO films from the 80s with particularly memorable soundtracks. Who sang… All alone I have cried silent tears full of pride Guesses in the comments and Sarah McLachlan making overly sincere look cute after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Okay, keldoo from “Fierce in Seattle” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Till There Was You” from The Music Man — then Baby Smiling from “Baby Smiling in Back Seat” guessed the singer, who was future-Partridge Mom, Shirley Jones, so now you’re ahead. But let’s see who comes out on top today with Random Tuesday. Whenever I want to be transported back to my college dorm room in the 90s, I just put on something by this coffeehouse staple. And it’s a long way down It’s a long way down It’s a long way down to the place Where we started from Guesses in the comments and Shirley Jones rocking the sexy librarian after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2 1/2; Me=2 1/2

Well, this is getting interesting! Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “All I Want to Do (Is Make Love To You)” by Heart and now we’re going into over time to see who wins the last week of our Women’s History Month Challenge. Starting off with Showtune Monday. Before she went on to play the mom in a popular TV show, this singer/actress sang this song in the movie version of a very popular musical: And there was music,  And there were wonderful roses.  They tell me, in sweet fragrant  Meadows of dawn, and dew Guesses in the comments and Heart cheesing it up after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2 1/2; You=1 1/2

Okay no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “If You Asked Me To” as originally sung by Patti Labelle and later covered by Celine Dion, and now I’m set to win UNLESS you guys know today’s lyric. In that case, we’ll have to break the tie next week. So let’s see what happens today with 70s or 80s Friday. I realize that I’ve featured a lot of Cheese-tastic songs this week, and this one just might be the cheesiest. 70s women-led guitar rock group remakes themselves into a 80s hair rock ballad band. They didn’t go on to chart in the 90s, but I do have to admit that I loved this song back in the day. So we found this hotel, It was a place I knew well We made magic that night. Oh, he did everything right Guessses in the comments and I’ve put both versions of this song after the jump. Let me know which one you (would never admit that you) like better: Patti Labelle: Celine...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1 1/2; You=1 1/2

Well no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)” by Barbra Streisand, so now we’re tied going into Black Artist Thursday. This was a HUGE hit for a particular white Canadian, whose songs I will never admit to having in my iTunes collection. However, it was originally song by this black singing legend. So who originally sang… Somehow ever since I’ve been around you Can’t go back to being on my own Can’t help feeling darling since I’ve found you That I’ve found my home Guesses in the comments, and Barbra Steisand rocks a closing number after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1 1/2; Me= 1/2

So Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “What’s Up” by 4 Non-Blondes. It should be noted that Kelli from “Fierce in Seattle” guessed correctly a few seconds later, but Jennifer’s came in first, so she wins. Either way, you guys get the point, so I’m annoyed. But moving on to Soundtrack Wednesday… This is like the fifth time this singer has been featured on GtRL and that is because she is awesome. Anywho, this meta-song from an even more meta-movie (which was originally a play) is one of my favorites. Who sang… How it will astound you That the glow of your being Outshines every star You’ll feel part of every mountain sea and shore Guesses in the comments and Linda Perry pretending to play like a child at a playground, b/f moving on to a much more lucrative career as a songwriter for other people, including Pink, after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1/2; Me=1/2

Okey-dokey, Elise from “Alternative Medicine Chest” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was by Billie Holiday, but she didn’t get the correct song title, which was “My Man,” so we’re starting off the week with a half a point each. On to Random Tuesday. My SIL and I heard this song on the overhead at Red Robin the other day, and we both commented on how it never fails to transport us directly back to the 90s, a time when Dr. Seuss hats and angsty ditties like this one ruled supreme. Who sang… And so I cry sometimes when I’m lying in bed Just to get it all out, what’s in my head Guesses in the comments and an “interpretation” of Billie Holiday after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Final Score: You=3 1/2; Me=1 1/2

So I suppose you guys are all happy now, b/c Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher. Well, our All-Women’s Month ain’t over yet, so just don’t get too happy, too soon. Ya hear me! Anywho, kicking things off with Standard Monday. Usually I love effed up love songs, but my only response to this one, is “Yeah, you need to dump him, girl.” He isn’t true He beats me, too What can I do? Guesses in the comments, and Cher takes one for the then-peace time troops after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2 1/2; Me=1 1/2

So here’s the situation: Gudrun from “Secret Life of an Expat” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was by Queen Latifah, but she didn’t get the song, which was “Ladies First.”  So now it all comes down to 70s or 80s Friday. NOW probably won’t being giving her any lifetime achievement awards, but I love this old broad, and this next one is what I like to call “a cheesy but a goodie.” Pride’s like a knife, it can cut deep inside Words are like weapons, they wound sometimes Guesses in the comments, and Queen Latifah before the Hollywood makeover after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=1

So, Jennifer the Tough Rabbit guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “9 to 5” by the great Ms. Dolly Parton. And now you’re ahead. But let’s see how you guys do with Black Artist Thursday. This woman always looks stunning in an Oscar dress, but I wish she would make more songs like this one: I break into a lyrical freestyle Grab the mic, look into the crowd and see smiles Cause they see a woman standing up on her own two Sloppy slouching is something I won’t do Guesses in the comments, and here’s some kind of Disney special with Dolly Parton after the jump. Warning, it’s kind of...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=1

Hmm, well, Jeff from “Three Line Lunch” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “I Am Woman (Hear Me Roar)” by Helen Reddy, and now we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday. This is my favorite country movie title song of all time, and it’s scary (and sad) how accurate it still is today. They let you dream Just to watch ’em shatter Guesses in the comments and Helen Reddy with a song that never fails to get me all revved up to do big...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=0

Alrighty, no one guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Rose’s Turn” as sung by Patti Lupone in Gypsy. But let’s see who comes out on top today in Random Tuesday of our Women Singer’s Month. I say if you’re going to be a one hit wonder, be a one-hit wonder with a song that still resonates with women and can be awesomely remixed for a Nike 90s ad. Anywho, I bet you don’t know who sang… You can bend but never break me ’cause it only serves to make me More determined to achieve my final goal And I come back even stronger Guesses in the comments and everything’s coming up roses for Patti Lupone after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: Me=2; You=3

So yay! No one guessed that Friday’s lyric was from “Heart of Glass” by Blondie. But boo! It was too late for me to win the week. Well, let’s move on… Somehow, I’m just now remember that it’s Woman’s History Month, so yes, let’s do all female singers or lead singers for the rest of the month shall we? Wee! First up Showtune Monday. I’ve never actually seen this show. But it must be okay if it keeps on getting so many revivals. I’m looking for the singer who’s known for breaking the fourth wall off on a b-word. Some people got it and make it pay. Some people can’t even give it away. Guesses in the comments and check out Blondie, trying on this new music video stuff...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=3

FINALLY! No one guessed coreectly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Umbrella” as sung by Rihanna, and so even though you’ve won the week early, at least I get to walk out of here w/ some dignity. Huzzah! But let’s move on to 70s or 80s Friday. This song always makes me feel like I’m dancing at Studio 68. It should’ve been like their theme song. Too bad the lead singer and the rest of the group like hate each other worse than the Police now. But this is one of the many effed up love songs they made famous before parting ways: Love is so confusing, there’s no peace of mind Guesses in the comments and Rihanna brings the bob back after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=3; Me=0

Hmm, well, Angela and Zacki cobbled together a correct guess that yesterday’s lyric was from “The Facts of Life Theme” as sung by Gloria Lo ring, the then-wife of Alan Thicke, mother of Robin Thicke, and MIL of Paula Patton. So now you’ve won the week early, but we’ll see who comes out on top today with Black Artist Friday. This singer was named to a list of the 20 most stylish black women ever along with Michelle Obama and Grace Jones. I defended her as style icon, but a few of my FB friends begged to differ. What do you think? When the war has took it’s part When the world has dealt it’s cards Guesses in the comments and the first sitcom I can remember actually anticipating after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=0

So, Amy from “Tall Drink of Nerd” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Love Song” by The Cure, but maybe I can come back today with Soundtrack Wednesday. Alright, this is hands down my favorite TV theme song of all time. You probably won’t know the name of the singer, so I’ll take the name of her husband at the time she sang this, who is an actor OR the name of her son, who is a singer OR the name of her DIL, who is an actress. Any REAL fan of this TV show will know the answer to this. You got the future in the palm of your hands all you gotta do to get you through is understand Guesses in the comments and Robert Smith before his goth look got old after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Ah well, Kelli from “Fierce in Seattle” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Fly Me to the Moon” as sung by Sarah Vaughn [I also would have accepted Diana Krall, Mel Torme, Michael Buble, and a host of others]. But let’s move on to Random Tuesday. The lead singer of this next group is still trying to rock the exact same look that he had in the 80s and 90s, and much like women who continued to wear the Farrah Fawcett look way past its and their prime, it makes him seem a little sad, although he was considered one of the cover boys for alt music back in the day. Who sang… You make me feel like I am whole again Guesses in the comments and good ole Frankie after the jump — because he really does do the best version of this...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=5 1/2; Me=4 1/2

Thanks to Michelle from “LA Times and London Moments” guessing correctly that last Friday’s lyric was from “Drift Away” by Dobie Gray, you guys very narrowly won or Black History Month Two-Week Theme Challenge. Oh well, hopefully now that we’re back to our usual potpourri, you guys will go down. Starting off with Standard Monday, I will accept any answer to the singer of this song, save Sinatra. Who sang… You are all I long for All I worship and adore Guesses in the comments, and Dobie Gray proves that mellow progressive rock is best enjoyed in bellbottoms and an afro after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=4 1/2; Me=4 1/2

Weeellll! Zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was by Aaron Neville (and Linda Ronstadt), but didn’t guess the song, which was “All My Life”. So now we’re tied and it all comes down to today and we’ve got one last battle to wage in our two week black history extravaganza theme. Funnily enough, I was SHOCKED when I saw something on VH-1 about this 70s singer, because I had NO idea he was black. I also like the country-rock remake of this song, but of course I’m looking for it’s original singer. Who sang… And when my mind is free You know a melody can move me Guesses in the comments and sing along with the karaoke version of “All My Life” after the jump: All My Life (In The Style of...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=4; You=4

Here’s the situation: no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “On Our Own” by Bobby Brown as sung for Ghostbusters II, so now we’re tied. Yay! But moving on to the redubbed Cheesetastic Thursday in our Black Male Artist Theme Week. On his own or with his brothers, this singer is not necessarily cheesy. But something very cheesetastic happens whenever he joins forces with a certain white female singer. Am I really here in your arms Its just like I dreamed it would be I feel like we’re frozen in time And you’re the only one I can see Guesses in the comments (if you dare to admit you know this song well enough to supply an answer) and after rewatching this video for the first time in years, I’m even more embarrassed that I used to think Bobby Brown was soooo awesome back then. Live and...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=3; You=4

So no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Save Tonight” by Eagle Eye Cherry, and now I’m only one point behind. Will I catch up to you today with Soundtrack Wednesday in our Black Male Artist Week? We shall see… I actually loved this song way more than I loved the movie sequel that it was penned for. The original movie was fantastic, and did not need a sequel. And sadly, I hear that a third installment is in the works. Sigh. But who sang… Now I find out that nothing is given Don’t know where the cards may fall All I know is that we’ve gotta get it Guesses in the comments and Eagle Eye Cherry in black and white after the jump. I thought this video was so cool back in the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=4; Me=2

Okay, well BabySmiling from “Baby Smiling in Back Seat” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Ol Man River” — but she didn’t quite get the artist who was Paul Robeson (though I almost gave it to her because she said it “sounded like Robitussin”). But I won’t crow about splitting the point, I’ll just get into Random Tuesday in our Black Male Artist Week. This guy is actually the brother of another GtRL artist that we featured this month. And this next song was a one-hit wonder. there’s a log on the fire and it burns like me for you Guesses in the comments and Paul Robeson circa 1936 after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=3 1/2; Me=1 1/2

So you probably think you’re bad because Jennifer from the Internet guessed correctly that Friday’s lyric was from Janet Jackson’s “When I Think of You,” but you ain’t bad, you ain’t nothing! And we’ll prove that this week, when the men take over our Black Artist GtRL Two-Week Theme in honor of Black History Month. Kicking it off with Showtune Monday. I just found out that this musical, which according to Wikipedia is considered “one of the most influential works of American theater” was actually based on a book. Anywho, this is probably the song that comes to mind when you think “musical” and “black male solo.” Don’t look up An’ don’t look down Guesses in the comments and Janet Jackson makes living in the projects seem like oh-so-much fun after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1 1/2; You=2 1/2

So here where we are as we end the first week of our special Double Week Black History Edition of GtRL. no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Set the Night to Music” as sung by the great Ms. Roberta Flack, and now we’re staring down a possible weekending tie. So without further ado, here’s the last singer of our Black Female Artist week with 70s or 80s Friday. I heard this song on the radio the other day, and I remembered how the video made living in the projects just look like so much fun. Who sang… I just get more attached to you when You hold me in your arms, and squeeze me And you leave me making me blue Guesses in the comments and sadly I wasn’t able to find even a scrap of the Roberta Flack version of this song to embed here, so you’ll just have to hum it to yourselves....

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2 1/2; Me=1/2

Alrighty, Jenny from Cali guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Check On It” by Beyonce (Pink Panther) and now you’re ahead going into what would be Black Artist Thursday, except we’re already in a Black Female Artist Theme Week, so until March, we’ll just make Thursdays, Cheesetastic Thursdays. And this duet might be one of my favorite cheesy duets of all time. Of course I’m only looking for the female in the duet, but if you know the fella, too, you’ll get much respect. Your heart beating next to mine, perfect love in perfect time Watch the world disappear Guesses in the comments and Beyonce in a lot of pink (panther) after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1 1/2; Me=1/2

Okay, Kelli from “Fierce in Seattle” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Buffalo Stance” by Neneh Cherry, and now I’m annoyed, because we’re tied. But let’s see how you do today with Soundtrack Wednesday in our Black Female Artist Theme Week. Okay, this woman has been in the GtRL several times, but you never seem to guess it’s her, even though she like lives on the Top 40 chart. Anywho, I never saw this movie which she starred in and recorded a big hit song for (b/c I knew I wouldn’t enjoy it), but I do love this jam: I can tell you wanna taste it, but I’m gone make you chase it You got to be patient, I like my men patient Guesses in the comments and I would actually still wear the outfi that Neneh Cherry’s rocking in this...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1/2; Me=1/2

Okay, well Amy from “Tall Drink of Nerd” guessed corerectly that yesterday’s lyric was by Nina Simone, but she didn’t say the title, which is “Sinnerman.” So that means we split the point and we’re tied going into Random Tuesday. It’s funny, b/c I still think of this alternative hip-hop artist, who hit MTV in the late 80s as being quite young. But I just read on her Wiki page that she’s not only 45 now, but she’s also a grandma. Wow! But who sang… So you say you wanted money but you know it’s never funny When your shoes worn through and there’s a rumble in your tummy Guesses in the comments, and the really random video for the Felix Da Housecat remix of “Sinnerman” after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=3; Me=2

This is so sad, b/c you guys started the week off losing, and I actually thought I might win the week. But then you rallied, and thanks to Zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” and Jennifer from the Internet, who together guessed that Friday’s lyric was from “Sunshine Superman” by Donovan, you sealed the win. Grrr! Well, we’ll see how you do this week, b/c in honor of Black History Month, we’re going to do a theme week of all black female singers. And next week we’ll do another Theme Week of all black male singers to round out the month. So starting now, we’re in a two-week competition to see who wins our Special Edition Black Artist GtRL. That all explained. I’m reading a book right now, in which the ghost of this singer haunts the main character in a really fun way. She’s also come up in one of my notorious plays. Who sang… I run to the rock, please hide me I run to the rock, please hide me, Lord Guesses in the comments and after the jump, the Honda Accord ad that inspired me to use “Sunshine Superman” as a...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=2

Apparently you guys also like overly dramatic love songs when you were kids, b/c Jennifer from the Internet guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “All Cried Out” by Lisa Lisa & the Cult Jam, and now we’re tied going into 70s or 80s Friday … Okay, this song is so druggy, I thought this song was recorded in the 70s, but according to Wikipedia is was released in 1966. It’s also by my favorite male one-name singer of that era. Who sang… Everybody’s hustlin’ just to have a little scene When I say we’ll be cool I think that you know what I mean Guesses in the comments and Lisa Lisa spends a lot of time staring out the window and writing in her diary after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=2

Apparently, everyone loves Fraggle Rock, b/c Jennifer from the Internet guessed yesterday’s lyric pretty quickly. Still, hopefully I’ll be able to tie it up today with Black Artist Thursday. Okay, most black girls I know memorized the lyrics to this song when they were in elementary school, and it remains one of my favorite melodramatic break-up songs of all time — though now that I look at these lyrics, I now realize that it was probably weird for our teachers that we were singing this on the playground… My body never knew such pleasure My heart never knew such pain Guesses in the comments and see the theme that always makes me want to get up and run in place while wildly flinging my arms about...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=0

Okay, seriously guys, you need to buy “L.E.S. Artistes” by Santigold yesterday, b/c no one guessed this lyric correctly yesterday. That all chastised, I’m happy to be way ahead going into Soundtrack Wednesday. Woo-hoo! One of my favorite childhood show themes, I’ll take the name of the show and one of it’s lead characters for the point. work your cares away dancing for another day Guesses in the comments and how amazing is this Santigold video after the jump?...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=0

So I’m rather happy that no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin, and perhaps I can move ahead with today’s Random Tuesday lyric. This black chyck is my favorite discovery of 2008 and needs to put out another album stat. Though, if you interview her, don’t ask her about R&B, apparently that’s her number one interviewing pet peeve. What am I here for I left my home to disappear is all I’m here for myself Not to know you I don’t need no one else Guesses in the comments and I’ve always love the way “Beyond the Sea” was used in this trailer for (I think the original)...

I’m still looking forward to my SIL’s visit next month, but maybe a little less so now, b/c she guessed correctly that Friday’s lyric was from “Forever in Blue Jeans” by Neil Diamond, therefore securing the win for you guys. Bad SIL! Bad! But it’s a new week, which means a fresh start with Standard Monday. I’m shocked that I haven’t used this song yet, b/c it’s one of my absolute favorites and it was even the title of my grad school screenplay thesis. This has been covered by several, but I’m looking for the guy who was most famous for singing it. my heart will lead me there soon Guesses in the comments and hey-ho! Remember this Will-Ferrell-Impersonating-Neil-Diamond Gap...

Guess the Random Lyric: You= 2 1/2; Me= 1 1/2

Okay, this is going to be a controversial decision, but though Jennifer from the Internet, came thisclose to guessing yesterday’s GtRL, while the singer (Vanessa Williams) was right, alas the song was not. She guessed two different variations, but neither of them were “Save the Best for Last.” So we’re going for the match point with 70s or 80s Friday. I’ve featured this guy on GtRL twice already, and that’s because I love him so very, very much. He’s one of my favorite singers from the 70s and that’s probably because I’ve never seen the one (reportedly abysmal) movie he did. Anyway, who sang… maybe tonight by the fire all alone you and I; nothing around but the sound of my heart and your sighs. Guesses in the comments and I had forgotten that the video for “Save the Best for Last” was even cheesier than the song. It’s like an 80s Harlequin romance novel come to...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=2

Okay, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Papa, Can You Hear Me” as sung by Barbra Streisand in Yentl, so now I’m looking to tie it up with Black Artist Thursday. It occurs to me that if you were born after the 90s, you might now know that this actress used to be a singer and before she was a singer, she was went down in the history books as the first African-American to get a certain dubious honor. However, this cheese-tastic song will always be what I associate her with. sometimes the very thing you’re looking for is the one thing you can’t see Guesses in the comments and Barbra proves that she can light a candle and sing at the same time (I cannot claim the same) after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=0

Oh noes! I thought I was safe with yesterday’s lyric, but Grace from the Internet  knew that yesterday’s lyric was from “Pepper” by the Butthole Surfers and now you’re way ahead going into Soundtrack Wednesday. For whatever reason, I’ve been thinking about this movie a lot lately. I thought it was brilliant back when I saw it as a kid, but it didn’t go down in history as one of this singer-turned-actress’s better movies. I wonder why. Anywho who sang… Looking at the skies I seem to see A million eyes which ones are yours? Guesses in the comments and a nice guest spot from Eric [C.H.I.P.s] Estrada in this Butthole Surfers video after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Ugh! Amy from “Book Simple” and Angela from Texas double-teamed me and guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Defying Gravity” as sung by the character of Elphaba in Wicked. But let’s see if you know today’s Random Tuesday lyric. I have two favorite songs about multiple people dying and this 90s gem  is one of them: They were all in love with dyin’ They were doing it in Texas Guesses in the comments and I don’t want to get all jealous of Idina Menzel or anything, but she does have the voice to pull off this song AND she’s married to Taye Diggs. Really it’s too much. Check out her Tony performance...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=3; Me=2

Last week was a nail-biter, but in the end BabySmiling from “Baby Smiling in Back Seat” guessed correctly that last Friday’s lyric was from “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles. However, I’ve got a plan afoot to totally come back this week. So let’s start things off with a showtune. Now that I’ve finished my outline and I’m actually starting the rough of the new book tomorrow, this is fixing to become like my theme song until further notice: It’s time to trust my instincts Close my eyes: and leap! I’ll take the name of the character that sings this along with the song’s name. Guesses in the comments and The Buggles after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=2

Alright, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Party Like a Rock Star” by Shop Boyz, so now it’s 70s or 80s Friday and we’re all tied up. This is for the win, folks! Yet another one hit wonder, but this song truly nailed future music trends. We hear the playback and it seems so long ago Guesses in the comments and Shop Boyz translating the rock star lifestyle into crunk after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=1

Okay, Kyle from “Frank’s Wild Lunch” inadvertently guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Rock Star” by Hole, so now you’re ahead going into Black Artist Thursday. Nuts! Man were these guys one hit wonders, but whenever I think of rapping mechanics, they will forever come to mind. they see me they just might panic my ice make em go down quick like the titanic Guesses in the comments and Liv Tyler dancing to “Rock Star” in Stealing Beauty after the jump. Man, I remember dancing to music like that in my room. I should try that again...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=1

Yay! No one guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “We Are All Made of Stars” by Moby. Which means that we’re tied going into Soundtrack Wednesday. I will always remember a young Liv Tyler dancing to this song in Stealing Beauty, the movie that made me want to go to Italy big-time. I still haven’t made it, but one day. Til then, who sang… We look the same We talk the same Guesses in the comments and Moby reunites Todd Bridges and Gary Coleman after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Drat! AngelaG from Texas guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Swingin’ on a Star” by Bing Crosby. But mayhap I’ll come back today with Random Tuesday. This is probably my favorite musician named after a literary animal. Who sang… Growing in numbers Growing in peace Guesses in the comments and Bing Crosby in black and white after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: You=4; Me=1

I’m just going to say that Zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” guessed correctly that last Friday’s lyric was from “Obsession” by Animotion, and I’ll leave it at that. But guess what. It’s time for another theme week! This week’s song all have one word in common. I’m not going to tell you that word, but I will say that it is one of my favorites in the human language and has quite a few variations. Also, this is my favorite standard which makes uses of this word. So who sang… A fish won’t do anything but swim in a brook he can’t write his name or read a book Guesses in the comments and animotion after the jump. Man, I would totally wear that blue dress...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=3; Me=1

Hiss!!! Jenny from (LA) block guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “War” by Edwin Starr, so you’ve won the week already. Whatever, let’s just finish this with 70s or 80s Friday. Just continuing with my random 80s tastes for psychologically weird love songs, it seems like I’m still hearing this one-hit-wonder on LA Radio at least once a week. Who sang… My fantasy has turned to madness And all my goodness has turned to badness. Guesses in the comments and Edwin Starr looks weirdly happy singing about “War” after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=2

Yay! No one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash. And maybe I can tie things up today with Black Artist Thursday. After seeing both Avatar and Book of Eli last weekend. The chorus of this next song got stuck on repeat in my head. I won’t ask you who sang this song. I just need the title and what event inspired the song. Within the younger generation Induction then destruction Who wants to die Guesses in the comments and a young Johnny Cash in black and white after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=0

I don’t understand how this is happening. Usually you guys are a guaranteed no-win on Tuesdays, but Amy from “Tall Drink of Nerd” and BabySmiling from “Baby Smiling In Backseat” totally double-teamed me and guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood, and you’re set to win the week early if you know today’s Soundtrack Wednesday lyric. How sad is that? I just found out that I have never used this guy as a GTRL, which is shocking, b/c he’s one my favorite back-in-the-day singers, and probably my favorite Columbo guest star/murderer of all time. Who sang…. Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a fool for you Guesses in the comments and Steve Winwood with one fo the most annoying songs ever after the...

Ugh! Jennifer from the Internet guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield, and now you’re ahead, but m/b I can tie things up with Random Tuesday. Now, I actually hate this song, but I heard it the other day and now it’s stuck in my head. This guy was one cadre of the “white soul singers” that served as a precursor for Justin Timberlake in the 70s and 80s. Except I like Justin Timberlake and I do not like this fellow. I could make the sun shine from pure desire. Let me feel that love come over me Guesses in the comments, and Dusty after the jump. Dig the sweet...

Guess the Random Lyrics: FINAL SCORE: You=5; Me=0

I almost thought about not talking to you guys anymore after you so thoroughly creamed me last week after Jennifer guessed that Friday’s lyric was from “Father Figure” by George Michael. But then I realized that it would be really hard to run FaN w/o talking to you, so I guess I’ll just move on to today’s standard Monday. There is only one blond 60s torch singer that I will love to end of time, and she sang this little ditty, which was originally offered to Aretha Franklin, but she turned it down. Oh, Aretha! being good wasn’t always easy no matter how hard I tried Guesses in the comments and George Michael actually makes models seem passionate and dramatic (as opposed to vapid and starving) in this black and white video. If only America’s Next Top Model hadn’t come along to prove him so very, very...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=4; Me=0

Zacki from “Tall Glass of Shame” guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “Part Time Lover” by Stevie Wonder and now you’ve soundly beaten me for the week. Well, let’s do 70s or 80s Friday anyway. I don’t want to say that I was attracted to dramatic and psychologically fuzzy songs when I was a kid, but this was by absolute favorite ballad of 1987 — and I was like 10. Sometimes I think that you’ll never understand me Maybe this time is forever, say it can be Guesses in the comments and Stevie Wonder mayhap giving his wife something to worry about after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=1

Woe is me, Amy from “Tall Drink of Nerd” totally guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, which means you’ve already won the week. But we might as well press on, since what else do we have to do at seven in the morning? On to Black Artist Thursday. This song makes cheating sound like SO much fun! Who sang… If I’m with friends and we should meet Just pass me by, don’t even speak Guesses in the comment and Kenny Rogers (on The Muppet Show!) after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=0

Crap, at the last minute BabySmiling from “Baby Smiling in Back Seat” guessed that yesterday’s lyric was from “These Are the Days” by 10,000 Maniacs, and now you’re ahead by 2. Shall I break out with today’s Soundtrack Wednesday? We shall see! So often movies inspire songs, but this song actually inspired a whole TV movie series. Who sang… And when he finished speakin’, he turned back toward the window Crushed out the cigarette, faded off to sleep Guesses in the comments and 10,000 Maniacs at Clinton’s Inaugural Ball after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Proving that you guys or nuts for both 1) showtunes and 2) Disney musicals, angela from Texas guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Gaston” from “Beauty and the Beast.” But the week turns around now, methinks, with Random Tuesday. The female lead singer of this group went on to have a big debut solo album in the the 90s, but then she flamed out, partly due to a rumored “difficult” personality. Who sang… Never before and never since, I promise, will the whole world be warm as this. And as you feel it, you’ll know it’s true that you are blessed and lucky. It’s true that you are touched by something that will grow and bloom in you. Guesses in the comments and the animated version of “Gaston” after the...

Yaaaaaay! No one guessed that Friday’s lyric was from “Lust for Life” by Iggy Pop, so that means I won the week. What a great way to start off 2010. But can I do it two weeks in a row? That is the question, and we’re going to answer it, starting with Showtune Monday. This was one of my favorite movies of the ’90s, b/f it became a musical, which I’ve seen twice, though I’m not sure that I would admit that at a party of academics. I need the name of the show and the song. Ev’ryone’s awed and inspired by you And it’s not very hard to see why Guesses in the comments and Iggy Pop — who was doing the shirtless thing waaaay before Matthew McConaughey — after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=2; Me=2

Well, Zacki from “Tall Glase of Shame” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Push It” by Salt N’ Peppa. Boo! But it’s not too late for me to win the week. Let’s move on to 70s or 80s Friday. Would it be weird if I made this my 2010 theme song, despite the druggy undertones? Your skin starts itching once you buy the gimmick about something called love Love, love, love Guesses in the comments and Salt N Peppa, how much do I love thee? after the...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=2; You=1

Okay, if you’re goal was to get my year off to a great start, you are succeeding. b/c no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Paper Planes” by MIA as made popular by Pineapple Express, and now I might win the week early with Black Artist Thursday. I decided yesterday that this was the female-driven wrap song ever — yes, even better than “Supersonic,” which I named a book after, so you know I must just be in crazy love with this one. C’mon girls, let’s go show the guys that we know How to become number one in a hot party show Guesses in the comments, and the dope, dope, dope video for MIA’s “Paper Planes” after the jump. Have I ever mentioned that I regret not going to art school, but I doubt they would’ve let me in just b/c I really wanted to be the kind of doper-than-dope visionary that graduated from art...

Guess the Random Lyric: Me=1; You=1

Yay, no one guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse. And now I’m looking to double down with Soundtrack Wednesday. I loved this song WAY before it was made popular by one 2008 comedy. And though it was everywhere for a while, I still get excited when it comes on the radio. Who sang: A radio in hell just pumping that gas Guesses in the comments, and Amy Winehouse after the jump. Seriously kids, leave them drugs...

Guess the Random Lyric: You=1; Me=0

Bah, humbug! Amy from “Stinky Junior” guessed correctly that yesterday’s lyric was from “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” as sung by Eartha Kitt and Louis Armstrong. But let’s not dwell on it. Let’s just get into Random Tuesday. Now I would argue that this person will die before she ever puts out another song of this caliber. But you never know. Sometimes people surprise you. The man said ‘why do you think you here’ I said ‘I got no idea’ Guesses in the comments and I abs ADORE this Rainn Wilson-Selma Blair take on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” I wouldn’t shop at The Gap (too expensive to be so square), but I do love their...

Guess the Random Lyric: FINAL SCORE: Me-2; You-3

Was it just two weeks ago that none of you guys guessed correctly that the last lyric of 2009 was from “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses? Too that point wasn’t enough to win me the week. But it’s 2010 now, and my resolution is to stump you at every turn with Guess the Random Lyric. Speaking of which, I decided to go with this next song for Standard and/or Showtune Monday, b/c it kept going through my head while I was in Hawaii, even though it was quite warm. Several duos covered this song, so I’ll take any of them, though my favorite remains the writer and his wife who according to NPR, used to sing it at parties for ish and giggles. My father will be pacing the floor (listen to the fireplace roar) So really i’d better scurry (beautiful please don’t hurry) Guesses in the comments and since The Waitresses didn’t make a video for “Christmas Wrapping,” I’m throwing up this fairly awesome fan video instead. Nice! Makes me want to record something homemade in 2010, but with like what...
